Any ideas? Ds wants me to take him to Lowes and buy a bunch of wood to make something. He was looking at our furniture and said he wanted to carve a design. He has very good motor skills and does well following directions. He’s carved soap, built a birdfeeder by himself (Lowes kit…maybe I need to check for more of those). Looking for safe ideas that he can do mostly independently (if possible), and make something useful. Thanks for any suggestions:) Gina
Hi, My son is 9 and just built a small bookshelf. Mind you it was very small! He took leftover wood from dad’s project. He worked very hard on it. The nailing was a bit difficult!! I was amazed that he finished..really. Only because he gets frustrated easy and wants to quit. But I kept encouraging him and he did it! It is in his room. He uses it for small items to display. Now, we are talking about 2 ft tall! 🙂
He has done those Lowes kits in the past too! One good one is the mini golf kit! As for carving..I have no idea! What a great thing to do! Hope you find some ideas!
Thanks! I love the bookshelf idea…think he’d enjoy tackling that. And I’ll have to check out the mini-golf kit. Thanks for the book idea, will try and check when at the library this week. Thanks a bunch for some ideas to get us started:) Gina
Most Lowe’s stores have “Build and Grow” Clinics where they help kids build a wooden project for free, and your child also gets a free apron & safety goggles. They are on Saturday mornings. You can also just purchase the kits they use yourself and make it at home.
Great suggestions here. My son enjoyed belonging to the Young Woodworkers Club a few years back – great projects and he could do most of them independantly (with just a little help from Dad at times). Sue, the Lowes build and grow clinics sound great – thanks for sharing. Blessings, Heather
Thanks for the additional suggestions! Our filter is blocking Amazon for some reason, but will come back to check those! Thanks for the Build and Grow reminder….it’s right down the street and we haven’t been in a while. The Young Woodworkers Club sounds awesome! Do you happen to remember how much shipping was? Thanks again ladies, lots to choose from! Gina
P.S. I re-checked on Keepers of the Faith (son made a keepsake clock last year) and noticed they have some wood making how-to books along with the many other wood kits, if anyone is interested: http://www.keepersofthefaith.com/category/ChildrensCrafts.html
