My boys (ages 12, 11, 9 & 7) all love to carve wood. We use different pocket knifes and they work great, for a set of wood carving knives we just went to Menards (store) and bought a kit. It is really nice and it’s like $15. Now it isn;t top of the line but it’s giving them real experience with using the differnent blades. As far as wood we just cut down trees on our land we have 10 acre’s. So can’t help you with that. Though you can find many sites online if you just good whittling, carving wood or something like that. Hope that helps somewhat!
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but they have some woodworking kits here:http://www.keepersofthefaith.com/category/ChildrensCrafts. We bought the clock kit, it’s not one you carve. But they have other woodworking kits. Blessings, Gina
Wow, I didn’t even think about carving soap, my almost 7 yr old has been begging to carve wood and he’s my firstborn so I have no experience with that at all and thought a knife was a bit much at that age! Do they use a sharp knife for the soap or just a butter knife? Is there a good resource for ideas on how/what to carve? For lamasahm, do you sit with your 7 yr old each time he’s using the pocket knife? Thanks!
Thanks for simplifying this new project interest for us, Iamasahm. I told my son to just get some sticks from the yard and see what he could carve from them with his pocket knife.
Voila! Instant success 🙂 He shaved all the bark off of a pile of twigs and was in utter bliss 🙂 I do think we may invest in a steel mesh glove though…
Has anyone recently bought a carving set? What do you like or not like about it? My son is asking for some carving tools for Christmas and I was wandering what you found to be the best tools?
We’ve been considering wood carving for our 2 oldest boys (9 & 7). We are clueless as to where to begin as well, so I’m anxious to see more recent responses. It would be a perfect Christmas gift for them, they hAve been watching their older sisters cross stitch, crochet, and knit…and want to have a busy hands hobby too ( and it would make all our reading aloud easier on me!).
We’ve been very happy with the starter set we purchased, linked above. The tools are easy to use and the wood is soft and easy to carve. The instructions are clear enough for my ten year old to use independently. We did purchase a steel mesh glove to keep her hands safe.
