Wish List – CMO resources/Bookfinder

I wish that when I went into the bookfinder to look for a book, each resource had the divisions (at least number of them) and what they are called – listed visibly.  Sometimes I have to click through several resources to find one that has helpful divisions – which is still faster than entering them all myself, BUT it’d be nice to be able to see for example – with the children’s book of virtues….  One has 31 divisions, untitled.   One has 4 divisions – just the four sections of the book.  Still another has every work in the book listed by name – the one I wanted!   It’d also be helpful to be able to search or see WHO inputed the resource – for example, it’d be fun to do a search for all of the resources that a forum friend has entered – or perhaps you really like the way a person divides up their resources into chapters or lessons – it’d be great to see right away which resource they edited so you can go straight to it, especially as we are getting more and more duplicates of particular curriculum, for instance – Apologia’s Swimming Creatures.

    Thanks!

And if people who have entered resources (from before the sharing feature mostly, I’d guess) see that there is a better one up there could delete theirs, it’d also make it easier!

You’re right, suzukimom, the duplicates are largely left over from bringing on all the books marked for sharing from before the sharing feature was active. No one had the advantage of seeing what was already entered back then.

We had originally planned to display who had entered each resource. After while you would get a feel for who has similar tastes and does a good job entering the information. That trust you gain over time would help you select the best resources to use.

However, we were a little concerned about displaying user names because some people have used their e-mail address, real name, or other things they might not want shared. We hope to eventually move to having a combined login for everything, so your forum nickname would work for the CMO too.

Regarding displaying the number of divisions or other information, it would be helpful in the short run but we’re very careful about adding extra clutter that makes it harder to see the most important information.

I wonder if the real answer is to find a way for the community to combine or unshare resources like you can now edit them? Or maybe provide away for the community to vote resources up and down so only the best appear first in a search?

We would love your feedback and ideas on any of this. Thanks.

Yes, I think “unsharing” would be helpful or voting – either way.  It’s just nearly impossible to differentiate between them without clicking on each one.  I appreciate that you’re careful of our privacy, I wasn’t thinking the the logins are different – I was thinking we could just use forum names.  I wonder if it would be helpful, but possibly cluttered, if we used our forum name in the tag section?

While we’re on editing resources – is it possible to switch which version of a resource you’re using WITHOUT have to delete it and reschedule it?  Is there a way to modify a resource midway through the year – for example – if you decide to move some lessons around?

I just discovered being able to view past edits of materials and LOVE it – what a great feature – as usual!

Yes, provided the version you want to switch to is the latest edition of the resource. If that’s the case, you can edit the schedule of the resource and you should see a message asking if you want to update the resource to the latest revision.

I think that would just get messy in the long run. I’d rather solve it well even if it takes a while to get there.

By the way, here’s how we’ve been thinking regarding CM Organizer features and upgrades lately. As you know we recently rolled out the big sharing and shared editing features. Those took many months to complete. So after that we spent a few months tackling some of the small features and fixes that were high on the list. Now we’re getting ready to dig into a larger, super-secret surprise that is not on the list, but that you will all love. (No, we’re not telling yet.) That will probably take a couple months and then we’ll likely go back to some of the small and medium-size projects.

We kind of like alternating a large thing and then some smaller ones and hope you all do too.

Well Doug, let me know when you are ready for some beta testers!
