    Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has some suggestions for nature study during the winter. We live in an area of the country where it is difficult to go outside during the winter due to inclement weather. Anyone else have the same problem? What would CM recommend?

    Hi!

    I have the same problem, too, being that we’re in Michigan. This topic was discussed a few other times on this forum and there were some great ideas offered. You may want to check them out. 🙂

    * Draw what you see out your window. Squirrels, birds, snow on trees, perhaps some buds on trees, etc.

    * Hang a bird feeder near a window and then observe and draw what you see.

    * Collect snowflakes during a snow fall and look at them with a magnifying glass. See the differences between snowfalls – fluffy snow vs. sleety snow, etc.

    * Draw fruits and vegtables from the kitchen. Maybe study still life paintings and make some of your own.

    * Draw your indoor plants.

    * Sprout beans and draw the changes every day.

    * Drink hot chocolate or tea and read a nature story.

    I second all the above recommendations from Esby.

    Currently we are doing bird study, We have several bird feeders outside our window and I let the children pick which bird to study first, (they selected black capped chickadee .).. we read about it in HONS (handbook of nature study) my older child , sketched one in her sketch journal. we then went on to computer to cornell lab of ornithology and listen to the sound of each species. So our 7 yr old sits in on it, he especially loves imitating the sound they make, but doesn’t have fine motor skills to sketch. We then went on to ladder backed woodpecker, and the other day when in the middle of something, he called us to say one was at the feeder and he was right… Another thing we have done in the past is add a poem and try and memorize it , that might fit the subject matter. (write it alongside the sketch as well)

    Indoors, you can do sprouts as mentioned, we began an avocado plant from the pit… and sketch as it grows (although slow)

    there is a series called  A Kid’s

    Ecojournal. (add whatever season, winter, spring, summer fall) they have nature activities for exploring the season.  We do not write or sketch in it, but follow as many activities as we care too. They are really worth looking into. they are put out by Trickle Creek Books and they are about $10 apiece for each season , but they did offer half price for damaged ones, (which I bought, and it just meant a bent page)

    Have fun…
