We have two weeks left of our scheduled school year and I’m so looking forward to next year’s planning….it’s my favorite part :))  Would you all be so kind as to link either your plans or your favorite blogs with plans?  I’m particularly interested in 5th grade and modified 4th grade for a dyslexic using Charlotte’s methods?

    Thanks,

    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

This year we are going to use SCM as purely as possible. I am adding additional independent missions literature (to loosley tie to our Visits study) for my older girls and *possibly* Apologia science. I am continually inspired by Sonya’s talks and this year I am convicted to have a really sweet, simple, and fulfilling year in which all of my kids are learning together again. Oh, my girls are 10 and 8 (turning 11 and 9 this new school year), my Ethiopian son will be in a local school this year, and my 5-year-old son will use Five in a Row with me, which I adore for the very early years (he won’t start Kinder for another year). I have all of my resources in the SCM organizer and I am ready to begin in July. We moved from Maine to Virginia a few weeks ago so I was eager to settle into our new town, our routine here, and get our upcoming school year whittled down … now we’re loving our time in the sunny south!

Also, I may want to add more Bible/character/devotion with Beautiful Girlhood for my oldest daughter … haven’t decided yet. I am struggling with this whole growing up business.

    Enjoy planning!

@erin.kate: where did you find your copy of Simply Spelling? I have Grade 3 in ebook format, but haven’t been able to find it lately. Shoelace Books apparently has gone out of business. Have you had it for awhile?

I bought it maybe 18 months ago … I emailed Laurie and she sent me her PayPal address. I paid the $9.95 there and she sent me the pdf. I can PM you her email address if you’d like … just let me know. As far as I know her online storefront is no longer functioning.

We are going to continue AO, and I won’t have to do any more combo years (YAY). I’ll use the SCM organizer and the 1 term grid printouts to keep us basically on track. We’ll continue most things – Visual Latin, MEP Math, dictation. (I also emailed the author to get Simply Spelling as a PDF. I think it was last fall.)

Since you mentioned dyslexics, I’ll relate what my son has been doing. We returned to CM and chose AO, so he did a combo 4/5 year and is finishing a combo (5/6) year. (As an aside, I would avoid making a combo year if possible. It’s difficult to get the right amount of challenge without overloading.) A big draw to AO was the number of free audio books – these have saved my sanity and allowed him that important independence. I literally threw him into Robinson Crusoe. He did great, that’s still his favorite book.

I slowed down the language arts for him: I delayed written narrations a year and even this year didn’t do a lot of them. I’m still trying to figure out dictation for him, or I may jump to Apples & Pears. For reading he’s just finished Dancing Bears Fast Track and it was magical for him. He is doing so much better. He’s just started book C, and I plan to start shifting some school reading to him. I will probably buy a few audio books next year. He is an auditory learner.

For my tweaking gotta-change-things side I’m working on a better group / family / morning time. More reading, more memorization, more hands-on, more nature time.

Here are our plans for grades 7, 4, 2, and K.  We also have a newborn who will be getting into everything next year.  A few programs we are continuing from this year.

History:  MOH 2, Famous Men of the Middle Ages, Peril and Peace, Monks and Mystics, and various other books

Science:  Finish 106 Days of Creation, Science Experiments You Can Eat, and I’m not sure what we’ll be doing after those.

Fine Arts:  Handel, Giotto, Robert Browning, Drawing with Children.  I only like to plan one artist/compsoer study at a time, so I’m not sure what we’ll be doing after these.  For Shakespeare, we’ll read MacBeth (Young Readers Shakespeare–these are beautiful storybook versions).

Bible:  My First Hymnal book and CDs (from CPH), Scripture memory box, Life in the Word (from SCM)

Laying Down the Rails for Children

Finish Chronicles of Narnia, if we don’t finish this summer.  If we do, I have plenty of great books on our bookshelf and my Kindle to choose from.

7th grade: Spelling Wisdom 2, Winston Grammar, Bravewriter, Write On!, Mathusee Epsilon and Zeta

4th grade: Spelling Wisdom 1, Bravewriter, Write On!, Cheerful Cursive, MUS Delta

2nd grade: MCP Phonics B?, McGuffey reader, Cheerful Cursive?, MUS Beta

K: MCP K, Liberty Math K, Bible Nuggets from CLP, FIAR?, Preschool Activities in a Bag, Scholastic ABC printable books to practice writing

I did Sonlight this past year, but have been migrating to CM very rapidly. Starting implementing things early on this past year morphing SL just a bit. This year I decided to do a custom plan using CM’s planning and this is what I came up with and not breaking my bank too too much. LOL

My kids are 9&8 or 4th & 3rd and we just finished up Sonlight’s Core B+C which is a quick tour through history from creation to modern day!! I expected a tip toe through and it was more like a roller coaster ride. 8-P

History: Early American History 1500-1800 using books from Beautiful Feet, CM, and Sonlight

also doing Texas history of the same time period using guide from a Gentle Tour Through History and spreading it out into 2 years instead of 1 and happy surprise all books are in our local library!!

Geography: Hollings Books spread out over 2 years with CC Long’s geography and A child’s geography lessons done once a week for 2 years too

Science: Combo of Beautiful Feet and CM

Bible: New Testament, Book of Saints (we are catholic), Seton grade 4(my son is holding his own here)

Character: LDtRfC in coordination with Character Classics books and songs

PE: family fitness Book teaches a new game of some sort, baseball, swimming, bike riding, and in bad weather…WiiU physical games

    Art/Music: I will be using the website….. http://classicalmusicnartcharlottemasonstyle.blogspot.com/ for both for now….

    Family Literature – CM

Family Math – Life of Fred once a week  — the kids added this in, not me…. LOL

4th grade: THese are done independently except the grammar & writing –TT4 & Horizons 3 (kid’s choice, not mine), MCP phonics & spelling, HWOT cursive, IEW EArly american History (borrowing from a friend and trying it out to see if she likes it) if not, back up is FFL4&WWE3, Vocabulary (We get this from our literature reading and I purposefully try and use new words often in conversation, but I also found these fun little workbooks on amazon called word ladders that kids can do for fun on Fridays…. As for the individual readers, Sonlight reader package 4/5 with oral narrations.

3rd grade: independent except grammar & writing as well — Horizons 3,(I have him let me know when something new is introduced and then I will have him go through that new concept on Kahn academy site… so far working great for both kids.) and he is asking to do TT3 too, but just for fun. MCP phonics & spelling, HWOT cursive, Writing through History (again trying this out because I need a break from FFL&WWE, but they are our backup if it doesn’t work for him. Vocabulary word ladders once  week for fun and Sonlight Reader package 3 with oral narrations.

Both kids have 4-5 household chores to do daily with a check off list because I change them up daily so they do not get bored and sloppy…for chores not done properly, then they get to run 5 laps around our circle drive = to about a mile and then do the chore properly….each one has only had to do this once! LOL

I do all family stuff first then work individually with one kid doing grammar & writing while the other one does independent work and then I flip and do the other kid’s grammar & writing and then I am done around 1:00 ish…… right now, Sonlight keeps us busy till 2:30 – 3 most days

I’ve been trying to think of a brief way to share our plans (lol).  I’m just going to share and if it gets long I apologize beforehand!

    Family Subjects:

Devotional – during this we read scriptures, learn hymns, practice memory work.

Art and Artist Study: We will be learning about Velazquez using the SCM Picture study portfolio.  We will also do Geography through Art as a part of our World Geography and Cultures study.  Chalk Pastels, painting, and lots of free access to art materials as well.

Composer Study – Still need to choose a composer for the year.  I’ll just use free online music.

Handicrafts – These are introduced to the family but then children run with the ones that call to them independently.  We have lots depending on the child (bookmaking, sewing, knitting, sculpture, clay, and more).

World Geography and Cultures – I did a big post explaining how we’ll work this for high school to little ones.  So excited for this one!

Nature Study – this is done often and as a family usually.

Book Club – We read 1 chapter book per month together as a family for this.

Group Studies for 4th grade and under (7 children):

Writing – We use Brave Writer as a jumping off point.

Science – I did a post explaining how we used to use Apologia Elementary nontraditionally and what we’re moving to.

Literature – We will play with Five in a Row as well, mostly for my younger five boys (ages 6, 5, 3, 2, and 9mos) though the 8 and 9 year old will  be welcome to join in.

    Independent work:

    4th, 3rd, and 1st graders

Math – each works in Math U See, two are in the same level but we do the lesson individually.

Copywork – I use StartWrite to make our own.

    Kindergartener

Living math – we just explore math with a lot of fun hands on activities.

Learning to read – we are loosely using All About Reading level 1 in this process.

    8th grader

Science – Exploring Creation with Physical Science is n the plan

    Copywork/Dictation – Spelling Wisdom

Literature – she’ll have her own list to work through

Writing – I use Brave Writer as my guide to be her writing coach and she spends a lot of time writing a novel as well.

Art – She will do a lot of art above and beyond our family art lessons because it is a passion for her.  She has a lot of resources available to her including several of the Artistic Pursuits books.

Phew!  I think that I didn’t forget too much.  Oh, and Shakespeare!  We’ll read 1 play with the 8th grader and read from the Lamb’s story version with the younger children.

If only I had a plan! I’ve been researching and reading a bit, but will be able to focus more this summer. I roughly know where I’m going….I just need to figure out how to get there and what it will look like when I do.

I have ds10 and dd9. The only things I know for sure so far are:

I’m combining SCM Module 5 and TruthQuest American History for Young Students I.

We are doing 3 artists for picture study. I haven’t decided which 3.

We will continue with MathUSee. Ds in Delta/Epsilon. Dd in Gamma.

I need to do a better job of incorporating handicrafts, so I’m consider Sloyd.

I’m switching from Apologia to AiG.

    JAG for both kids.

Ds’s independent lit. selections so far are: Bambi, Tom Sawyer, Oliver Twist. I still need to choose 3-4 more.

Dd’s independent lit. selections are: Incredible Journey, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Bambi, and the Shoe books (Ballet Shoes, Skating Shoes, Dancing Shoes)

Family lit. selections so far are: Little Men, Understood Betsy. I’m still choosing.

I’m slowly accumulating the many books we’ll need for history next year, and still have much planning to finish. But it’s a start!

Christie, What resources will be used for the photography 101 class?  We have that as an add on option for our science studies this year.  I am basically useless with a camera.  I want the kids to be better equipped!  Wink

I posted our plans on the Middleschool & Highschool Plans thread.

@Tailormade – I don’t know. When the mom if she’s planning, she will add it to our catalog, but likely not until late summer. I know she’s good with digital, film, dark rooms, photoshop, but I don’t know her plan.
