Just curious why the Simply Charlotte Mason curriculum switches (for those who started with RightStart Mathematics) to Math-U-See in grade 5. And has anyone continued with RS Geometry and Algebra?
We recommend Math-U-See and RightStart because those are the curricula we have used and know personally, and because they have some components of a CM approach to math. (We don’t know of any wholly CM math curriculum at this point.)
Last I looked, the RightStart curriculum did not go through high school math, like Geometry and Algebra. So a user would make the switch once she has completed the available RS levels.
Okay, I thought that might be the case as I don’t remember there being a Right Start geometry or algebra when we started, but I didn’t look too closely as I wasn’t thinking that far in the future yet!
RightStart goes up to E, but then skips to G (Geometry).
It looks like Level F should be available sometime in 2017, and should bridge the gap between the two.
We are still in Level E, have around 80 lessons left, and have been doing two lessons a day to “get caught up”. Not sure if I want him to jump into Geometry just yet.
Since I really want to do the one of the ‘Your Business Maths’ with him also, thinking about slowing down with Level E, then doing a YBM, and then hope level F is out for next year or by the time we finish. Though I’m not sure how YBM is paced…
And wondering if I would be missing out if I skipped Math-U-See Epsilon (grade 5) and Zeta (Grade 6)? Or if RS Level E and F will lay a solid foundation in fractions, decimals, and percents? He is doing really well with fractions so far in RS…
Your Business Math is flexible in the pacing. You can use it at whatever pace works best for you and your student.
Some parents do it over the summer.
Some designate one day a week as “store day” during the school year; for example, they work on their regular math curriculum Mondays through Thursdays, and Fridays they work on their YBM store.
Some set aside their regular math curriculum and do YBM for several weeks and then go back to the curriculum.
You will find several sample schedules in the front of the teacher book, outlining options for completing it in 14 weeks, 26 weeks, or 36 weeks, but do what works best for you.
