I’ve finally started thinking and planning next year. It’s a bit crazy to think I’ll have the following grades:

    6th

    2nd

    1st

    K

    PreK

    Toddler

    Infant

And HOW did my daughter make it to 6th grade? Seriously, where does the time go?

I’m changing things for next year in some areas and not in others. It looks like I’ll be creating my own history curriculum pulling resources together for a year studying our church’s history (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints aka. Mormons). I adore the way SCM does history (we’ve been doing Module 4 this year), but I want a year really focused in on our church history so I’m taking what I’ve learned from SCM, using Planning Your CM Education, and make my own thing!

Science for Makayla (in 6th) is up in the air but we’re leaning toward Christian Kids Explore Physics. Science for the rest of the kiddos is going to be Considering God’s Creation. Everyone will do nature study.

Writing for 1st-6th graders is WriteShop at various levels, though I do have IEW materials to rotate in if someone needs a change.

Math for everyone is Math U See at their levels.

Beyond that I have NO CLUE what we’re doing. And I really need a solid week of planning time at least to coordinate the history curriculum I want to create. Tell me when I’ll find time for that around 7 kids and a new baby with lots of medical appointments?!?!? At least we have a few months before I need it done.

You will never find the time, Tristan!  Well, maybe with a babysitter, some early mornings, late nights and a grandparent or two…maybe…..

I’m always in planning mode.  Here’s what I have so far.  Oh, my kids are 11, 11, 8 and 5.

History.  We’ll be starting Ancient History.  Using SCM guides.  Trying to cram all 3 into one year, or as close as we can get it.

Science.  Exploring Creation with…Ocean Animals (we actually just started it).  Then either Physics with God’s Plan for the Physical World (plus some other books and kits) OR Exploring Creation with…Land Animals.  Or both.  Probably Physics during the winter months when it’s very cold here with lots of snow.  And animals during the warm months when we can go out and find some or hit the zoo.  We’ll also include a side of botany as we plant and tend our garden.

For “language arts” we will continue All About Spelling, some Mad Libs, grammar and word books from the Words are CATegorical series and others.  We may or may not pick up Growing with Grammar again.  I’m still trying to figure out if the older boys need more or if that’s enough for now.  My youngest is also using All About Reading.  Love it.

Math – RightStart for all levels.  I might have one finish it this year so I’ll have to figure out where to go after that.  Scary.

Foreign Language – older boys are doing Visual Latin.  After they finish that we’ll move into whatever it was that Bookworm suggested.  We’re all doing Portuguese and Hebrew on Mango Languages (free through our library).  We also use Sarah and David for Hebrew.

We’re studying China for geography/cultural studies.  We haven’t decided what to do after that.

Nature Study will probably be Jack’s Insects then ??????  And the garden where hopefully we’ll find bugs.

For extras we’ll do composer (Beethoven, Paganini, von Weber, Rossini) , artist (haven’t decided), poetry, logic, fairy tales, and map drill.

Oh chicken enchiladas, I have more holes than I thought……off to research some more.   Does it EVER end?

Don’t wanna be, but I guess I have to start shifting into planning mode with all of the used book fairs coming up.  For now, I’m sticking with the SCM Curriculum Guide as a starting point plus suggestions I’ve gathered to tweak that, and I’ll be compiling a “MGA Books Needed – 2012-13” list very soon.*  That way, I can note what we have on hand, from which libraries I can get what we need, and what’s left (or desired) to purchase.

Yep, definatly in planning mode for next year. (and a few things to decide for third them and it’s only a month away!)

I’ll have one in 6th and one in 3rd.  On some things they are evenly matched skill wise (one a little behind, one way ahead) so I’ve got some challenges.  Here’s what I know so far:

    ds grade 6:

Math: MUS Gamma (should start this next term and hopefully go through quickly where he already has a decent grasp of the multiplication table — just needs to achieve full mastery and work with larger numbers), hopefully start Delta sometime after Christmas.

LA: Complete Queen’s LLEC (not sure if we’ll then do the next book or Jr. Analytical Grammar), possibly WriteShop Jr or Writing Strands level 3 (one seems more fiction so maybe both??  need to look closer at these), continue with Beautiful Handwriting Italics & Spelling Wisdom.

    ds 3rd:

Math: MUS Gamma (he’ll start MM grade 3 at the beginning of third term, so I’m hoping to keep him in that until the end of this year to give his older brother a head start on MUS.)

LA: Finish Queen’s LLVY 2 and complete LLEC, and all the same other things as older ds.

    Family:

Bible/History/Geography: I will be using a modifidied version of Mods 1 and 2.

    Science: Probably continue using CGC

That’s about as far as I’ve managed to get so far.  I’m still deciding between French and ASL, as well as which artist & composers to study.  We will be studying Robert Frost for poetry, and I am considering Shakspeare as well.  Maybe Draw Write Now for younger and Draw & Write Through History for older…

I am definitely in planning mode, especially for history. I have to decide what I will purchase, borrow from a friend/library, find used, etc., to fit the budget we have set. Some things will just carry over from this year (math, nature study, science, copywork, spelling, some geography) and some things will be new (cursive handwriting, maybe Spanish/Latin, pic./poet/hymn studies).

One thing that I have to get settled is how much reading/how many lessons need to be accomplished daily/weekly to get through a program…I really slacked on narrowing that down. I have the Planning Your…from SCM, and used it, but just not to a full benefit.

So, yes, I’m in big planning mode right now and have organized my bookshelves, put many things on PBS and am trying to get a bit more organized.

Nope, not yet. I’m too busy planning the next year of our CM co-op and since we school year round, I won’t be ready for the next year until August or September. I like reading other’s plans, though.

I’m always in planning mode, too, it seems. Next year I’ll have a third grader and a kindergartner. Here’s what I have so far:

Bible-continue reading through OT and NT; K can listen in; will also continue through our Bible story book for dd (K)

Math-no formal program for either. My list of goals for each are: ds (3rd)-multiplication through 2 numbers by 1 number, fractions, 4 digit numbers, introduce geometry, column addition of more than 3 multi-digit numbers; dd-count to 100; introduce patterns; count backwards from 10, maybe 20; count by 2s, 5s, 10s; maybe even/odd if we have time

    Language Arts:

3rd-transition from copywork to transcription; start cursive (?); Ruth Heller and Brian Cleary books (1x/week); poetry of Christina Rossetti, Hilda Conkling, Sara Teasdale (2x/week); finish Salsa Spanish (after that, undecided); reading-undecided; literature read alouds-I want to do 2-3 Little House books; after that, undecided

K-continue reading through early years selections and my own personal favorites picture book list; transition from writing on unlined surfaces (such as the Magna Doodle) to lined paper; continue word building activities with more of an emphasis on word families; use word family cards; may begin DR or similar lessons after she turns 5 1/2; seasonal poetry (2x/wk)

Science-Habitats (2x) (3rd); seasonal books (2x or as available) (K) (They’ll probably be listening in on each other’s readings)

Geography-finish our study of the 50 states; begin world geography. Hope to complete North/South America and Europe in 3rd

Character-other than a Joy Berry book 1x/week, undecided. May read through a booklist I’ve worked up based on character traits, splurge on BF, or go through Children’s Book of Virtues for the third time, this time with dd listening in

Fine Arts-Composer Study, Module 3; Picture Study-as many from Modules 2 & 3 as I can work in (we got a late start in grade 1 in this area)

Not in official planning mode, but in brainstorming mode.  Smile

I’m seriously considering taking a break from western civilization altogether in history and focusing on Asia for a year (my dad was Sri Lankan and I was born in Sri Lanka, and we were also missionaries in the Philippines) so I feel like it would be both historical and personal.  I also feel like western civilization will get hit quite a bit in our educational journey here in the U.S., so this might just be a fun departure.  Not completely sure yet, but pondering…

My kiddoes are going to be grades 6, 4, and 2 in August (ages 11, 9, 7).
