The thread on chalkboard paint got me thinking. I am in need of a new white board. It no longer erases – I have to spray it with the cleaner to get it clean anymore. So should I get another white board or a chalkboard? It would be nice to have it be magnetic, but not the end of the world. I was thinking of finding some sort of magnet board (or paint? Do they make that?) for underneath whatever board I use if it’s not magnetic. What do you use and why, or which do you prefer?
Many people like white boards better, but I like the old fashioned look of chalk boards. A friend got a fantastic, large one through a restaurant supply company, and when we’ve finished remodeling and painting our dining room, I’m hoping to find a nice big one to put on the wall there. I won’t be worrying about magnetizing it as it’s just not a priority with the way we use it (right now we have a small, well-worn and ready to be replaced chalk board!).
YES! They do make magnetic paint and it does work. I have some in my kitchen, though not under chalkboard paint. But my DH, who works with paint in his business, says the magnetic paint will work under any paint, including chalkboard.
We went with white board in our school room (aka dining room) b/c DH had a piece of scrap white board wallpaper. (Yes, they make this in rolls to cover entire walls!). So, it was free. DH just pasted it on, and then made a nice wooden frame around it. While it isn’t as classic as a chalkboard, it is a lot less dusty which works for me. I just couldn’t handle all of the chalk dust, though I believe they make chalks that are supposed to be less dusty.
I have to keep my white board clean (it is not clean at the moment!) or it will get to where the eraser doesn’t work well anymore. I also use only Expo pens and erasers as I’ve found the cheaper pens will tend to get stuck on it. I have some write-erase crayons but we don’t use those on our board, only on the small hand-held boards, which btw you can get magnetic this time of year (target, office supply, etc.).
I hate chalkboards – the sound of fingernails (or even the thought…..) – or chalk squeeking on it…. I cringe whenever I see anyone use a chalkboard anymore.
also, my dad was a teacher – he ALWAYS had chalk dust around his pants pockets. (on the other hand – as a kid, I always had chalk for playing hop-scotch… sometimes in colours! Not many other kids had chalk.
Not sure were you are from but we just purchased a magnetic white board (dry erase) at costco. it is large and comes with the mounting hardware. $20! so if you are a costco family check it out…. they might have one online as well.
If you want a large White board just go to Home Depot or Menards, ect… and buy a marlite wall. Make sure you get the smooth one though. I used this for years. If you are not sure which one I am talking about when you get there just take a dry erase marker. 🙂 Tehe he…..
It cost ALOT less than a dry erase board and you can cut it to the size you want. I should say sizes you want because there will be enough to make several boards if you want.
Yep, make your own for less than $15.00 – I did an entire post when we did ours in 2009 and they’re still working great! Here is the link if you want details on what board to get (our store cut ours to size free so we have 2 in the dining room): http://ourbusyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2009/06/diy-dry-erase-boards.html
