I’ll keep that in mind.  My kids have rarely used my Kindle (generally while waiting somewhere) and neither I nor Them go into the bookstore.  I am cynical enough to figure the similarity would not be a coincidence.

Actually, we got the 2 oldest used Palm Pilots for Christmas (gotta love Freecycle!) and I used to use mine as a small ereader.  I will be setting theirs up with the PDF Reader, and Mobipocket Reader… and they will be able to read a LOT of the books out there.  (Mobi format is the same as Kindle format – but you can’t read the ones you BUY or Download from Amazon – but there are lots of free books from other sources.)  If needed, I think there is an EPUB reader too.   The screen isn’t as nice (a B&W LCD) and the screen is small, but will work for us with the great price of Free.

And that is a great option for people that would like a prortable eReader but can’t afford it – put a WANTED post on Freecycle for working Palm Pilots and you may get an answer.  We picked up 4 before Christmas (someone put up an OFFER) – and someone else put up an offer for 3 or 4 a few days ago….

great Idea suzukimom. I didn’t think someone would freecycle something like that. I have gotten a couple really nice things on there and never thought of posting a want.  I landscaped my lawn for free. 🙂 If I get a chance I will have to try it. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for all the great info.  Britney, thanks for letting another non-tech savvy person know that I could still probably use the Kindle Touch:)  Suzukimom, that’s a great idea and I had no idea you could use Palm Pilots for that, I have my old one from college but my kiddos broke the charger/USB cabke trying to plug it in:(  Maybe it would be cheaper to just get a new charger if they still make them for my model.  Thanks again everyone

Hey, just a heads up for anyone using a Palm Pilot… For quite a while you couldn’t sync one (using USB, which was my only option) with a Windows 7 (64 bit) computer.  That was actually when I stopped using my palm pilot, and ended up getting a Kindle.  There is now a free 3rd party driver that works great… so if you need help with that, let me know.
