LBC, Living Books Curriculum also sells the Serl books in an updated version. I bought the pdf’s one time when they had a huge special. If you plan to use them for more than one child, this makes them quite economical since you can just copy off what you need after your initial purchase. Here’s the link: (I hope.)
On Margot Davidson’s version — Not sure of specific details on the differences between Margot’s and the original, but I own PLL from Margot and my understanding was that she revised it to provide a more Catholic perspective and to update some of the language and illustrations to draw in children of today more effectively. Again, I can’t comment on specifics because I haven’t seen the original, but I can you that the book is well done, strong paper stock, study binding and the colour illustrations are BEAUTIFUL. (we really enjoy the lessons that are picture narration for this reason!) Again, this is particular to PLL but I’d imagine Margot had the same purpose for ILL.
Customer service through Margot was great. You can actually order direct from Hillside Education. When I emailed Hillside Education with a question on PLL, Margot responded directly and was just lovely to chat with. HTH some!
I can’t find it now, but one time on Amazon the reviewer said to make sure to get the hardback version of the Serl book; the newer paperbacks were full of mistakes and not as nice. I am not sure if they were refering to the Davison version. I was trying to double check that.
That said, I read that the Davison book was revised with new pictures to appeal more to children and the wording changed to meet today’s English. I have to admit that I am a bit hesistant to purchase it based on those kind of changes, since you can’t see if it was “dumbed” down so to speak.
The price increase would include the spiral binding, which adds about $6.00 to a book. Adding the white space is also going to result in more pages, so the cost will go up from that.
If you are interested in PDF’s of Serl’s book, I posted this site the other day. It has the original pictures updated to color and has made the book more “user-friendly” and independent for a child to use. It will save me time.
I thought that it was very resonably priced for a book to use for 3 school years and with as many children as you want. Also, if you get this version, you would not need the hardback one. =)
Simple Home, I don’t know if anyone mentioned that in the hardback version, the paintings are not in color (or at least they weren’t when I purchased them several years ago). In Margot’s, the paintings are all in full color. That made all the difference for one of my kids. The others were fine either way.
