I have a DD who has been using workbooks for grade 5. She is not enjoying school anymore and I was looking for something different that would get her more excited about learning. I am looking into the CM method and really like what I see. I was going to start slow to transition her, but I wanted to know if I should just start with year 5 books or a lower level as we have never done this before.
I think it depends on the kid…My daughter is just okay at reading, and would get overwhelmed at having the number of books CM curriculums ask for, so we buddy read most of them (She reads a page, then I read a page). Keep in mind my DD is in 3rd grade
This is our first year homeschooling. Before that, my DD went to public school. I started a semester lower in math to review and very basic in narration expectations, but on a 2nd-3rd level for literature, history and character development. I think the academics are more rigerous and the methods are different. We’ve been at this about a month, and already she’s settled into a routine. SCM has a post somewhere about transitioning to CM.
I would try to find book samples and find a level that she would enjoy, maybe a bit challenging, but not frustrating. Fifth grade book difficulty can vary greatly among different CM curriculums. My 3rd and 6th graders have had no trouble w/the SCM selections at grade level…but it really depends on her reading ability. Maybe you could find some free online samples for her to pre-read? Just a thought:) Blessings, Gina
