I was hoping someone could help me make the decision between two books for dd 11 to read this year to complement our Canadian studies / world history studies. I am trying to pick between Calico Captive and Indian Captive:The Story of Mary Jemison. They both take place in the mid 1700’s and have a similar storyline. I think the main difference is that Mary ends up living her life with the natives and I don’t think that the other plot ends that way. They both come so highly recommended and I think they are both based on true accounts.
What would you do? I suppose I could always read them or one as ANOTHER family read aloud if that would be the better option as well. Though I think I will already have quite a few! HA! That’s an understatement!
Indian Captive is the very first book I checked out of the library the day I got my library card when I turned 5! I have very fond memories of it, forty years later. 🙂
For what it’s worth…librivox.org has a free recording of a Mary Jemison book. I don’t think it’s this one though…and I haven’t listened to it yet…so can’t testify on how good it is. But I was considering it for a road trip sometime…if it’s good, maybe you could have your cake and eat it too without any extra reading 😉
We’ve only read Calico Captive. I like other books by Speare, but I didn’t care for this one. It is well-written, and the sister’s family is very sympathetic, but my family didn’t care for the main character. She seemed so flighty and flirtatious in the midst of everything – very concerned about “boys and clothes”. Although she learns/grows in the book, by that point I didn’t care much for her anymore.
The book is about Susanna Johnson (the sister) and Miriam Willard (younger sister and main character).
Susanna’s family’s plight is heart-wrenching and gives a good feel for what it must have been like for them (SPOILER ALERT: son stays behind with Native Americans, children being bought/adopted by French without her consent, husband in jail until he can ransom his family, etc).
