Hi – We are new to homeschool and to the CM approach.  My daughter is in 4th grade, and I’m not sure where to start in the ULW/SWA book.  Should I begin with Lesson One since narration is new to us, or should we start at Lesson 71?

    Thanks!

Hi April! This is a great question and welcome to SCM homeschooling! To know where to start your daughter, you’ll need to assess what your daughter has already learned up to this point and using the placement guide for ULW can be very helpful in gauging where to begin: https://media.simplycharlottemason.com/downloads/Using-Language-Well-Placement-Guide.pdf

If you do decide to begin later in the book you can also thumb through the lessons you are moving past and any lessons with the light bulb icon are an indication of English Points where the student will be encouraged to look closely for patterns of punctuation and capitalization in the Spelling Wisdom passages. With gentle guidance, the student will identify English usage and mechanics guidelines for themselves and record their observations in their own words in the English Points Journal in the back of their book. These English Points are also available for you in the Teacher Guide so you can make sure your daughter understands them.

Let me know if you have additional questions after using the Placement Guide or as you get started with your lessons.

Thanks so much, Valerie!  We’ve decide to start with Lesson 1 and adjust as needed.  I really appreciate your input!
