Where to start in history?

    Hi!

I’m thinking about using SCM this year but can’t decide where to start my kids in the history units.  My kids are ds11 (5th grade) and dd9 (4th grade) and my littlest tagging along, ds6.  🙂

We haven’t done any kind of history cycling – mainly doing reading from the Robinson list, AO list, some HOD, and other random picks over the years (very scattered).  If we were to stick with SCM through high school, which history unit would be best to start with?

    Thanks and blessings!

Start with the point in history that you are most comfortable with, and that you like to study the best.  A lot of people in the US choose Early Modern (1550-1850), which includes the birth of the United States.

Thank you, jawgee.  That may be a good starting point.  Most of our history has been concentrated nearer the beginnings of time (Genesis, etc.) with a bit of early American history and even a smidge of British/European courtesy of AO.  🙂   Just trying to figure how it will pan out for the HS years…

If you started with Early Modern, you would be able to get through the entire rotation before your oldest graduated. I usually write a little scribble like this one to help me figure it out:
    Grades – History Study
    5/4 – Early Modern
    6/5 – Modern Times
    7/6 – Genesis & Egypt
    8/7 – Joshua & Greece
    9/8 – Matthew & Rome
    10/9 – Middle Ages & Renaissance
    11/10 – Early Modern
    12/11 – Modern Times

With that rotation, both of your students would get the full credit of American History and World History during their high school years.

Oh, thank you Sonya!  You addressed my main concern about HS credits.  I had played around with a similar “chart” of their grades and units and was thinking that it might be right but your post confirms it. 🙂
