This is related to a previous topic about 4 months ago from another poster. I just saw it when I was searching. It didn’t completely answer my questions so I’m doing a new topic.
My DD6 finished the 100EZ lessons book. My plan was to move to Delightful Reading but once getting there realized it was too tedious at this point. We’ve moved on to reading through some easy readers. (Hop on Pop, Go Dog Go, Biscuit books) The BOB books and Dick and Jane are too simple for her. She’s reading through the Treadwell Reader Primer currently. I wanted to do a CM style lesson where we pick out new words and then do word building. Once again, it seems too tedious. She seems to do better if I just let her read through.
There still seems to be things we need to learn though, like different phonics rules that weren’t included in 100EZ lessons. Should I start spelling/dictation so early? I apologize, I’ve been gettting accustomed to homeschooling K with a preschooler and 2 toddlers so I haven’t had much time to keep up my CM reading and study. It seems as if both of those should wait according to CM principles but I feel like in some ways they would be beneficial now. Should we just keep reading through the Treadwell Readers for a few months and just covering new words as they come up. Should I “test” (not really test, you know what I mean) on new words in new stories after we’ve read them?
I’m just kind of lost at where to go from here. Thanks in advance.
I have a 1st grader and a K’er. We do copywork (rather than dictation or spelling), and we just read books to learn to read. If she likes reading books, just give her more books to read, and discuss phonics rules as they come up. The best way to improve at reading is to practice reading. I did use the Treadwell primer with my K’er, and we started the first book and decided to hold off as she was having a hard time remembering the harder phonics rules (like two letter combinations). Another thing we are doing for K is I am giving DD5 word problems so she can read the problem and figure out the answer. Math and reading combined!
I would just do copywork and reading at this point. Teach her the rule as she comes to words she doesn’t know. She will pick up spelling and phonics rules as she does copywork and reading.
All good suggestions! Did you notice the list of books after lesson 100? The directions for using them suggest pointing out new words/”rules” in the same way you did while going over new sounds in the 100 lessons. The list of books is ordered by what they’ve already learned in the 100Ls, then gradually adding more and more abilities through book reading practice.
