We are doing MFW CTG and while it is a good program, this year hasn’t been as smooth as last year. So if we finish this year out I am not sure where to go next. My dd is 11 and about 5 grade level and I have twin boys age 7. We have never covered American History and this is our second time through ancient. The first was with TOG. I would like my dd to have some american history before the high school years. Should I just skip ahead to colonial times or continue on with Rome and then Middle ages? I also thought about starting at the Renaissance and going form there.
On the down side I feel terrible for being a curriculum hopper and really messing up our history time line.
What about touching lightly on Rome, Middle Ages, Renaissance for this go-round, knowing that you will hit it again in a more leisurely fashion later? I like to lay out the grades I’m dealing with and just start plugging in possibilities to get an overview picture. Here’s one possibility using the “touch lightly” idea I mentioned:
2 and 5 -Rome, Middle Ages, Renaissance (could do one each term)
3 and 6 -Early Modern
4 and 7 -Modern
5 and 8 -Ancients
6 and 9 -Middle Ages, Renaissance
7 and 10 -Early Modern
8 and 11 -Modern
9 and 12 -Ancients for 9th graders; Government/Worldview for 12th grader
10 -Middle Ages, Renaissance
11 -Early Modern
12 -Modern
Please don’t beat yourself up over a time line, dear. The children will make the mental connections from here out, and you still have many years of wonderful learning with them!
I was going to ask a very similar question about history. I am trying to make sense of the order of history. Should it be taught chronologically? Should I start with a general overview of America then proceed to Ancients? I know this shouldn’t be hard! We started Ancient Egypt this year (2nd grade), and I was hoping to finish with Greek and Romans. Renaissance/Middle Ages would be for next year (3rd grade). Right now things get rather busy at times so history doesn’t get done as much as I would like. So adding in Greeks and Romans this year may be wishful thinking!
Okay, so this is where things got fuzzy. I started to think ahead about combining children in the future. My children are 7, 6, 2 and newborn. It looks like MFW can do that. If I go that route CTG doesn’t start till 4th grade for my oldest based on the 5 year cycle.
Is there a curriculum that anyone recommends for history? Right now I am using Veritas Press but not sold on this one.
