DD15 is planting a garden this year again (mostly raised beds, square foot garden style), and she is also taking a 4-H self-determined projects about GMO’s. (Which is interesting in and of itself, since the Junior Fair Board chairman told her that Monsanto is one of the main sponsors behind our Fair’s budget, and Monsanto = GMO’s, basically….but I digress.)
We have just purchased seed packets and transplants from local stores and nurseries, but this year we’d like to purchase non-GMO seeds. I am wondering where those of you who garden organically purchase your seeds. We are in zone 6b, so we need to start some things indoors within the next two weeks. We can actually start our onions and leeks indoors now.
Can anyone recommend places online to order non-GMO seeds or stores to purchase them in northeast Ohio? Thanks.
I am thinking about ordering from Gardens Alive because they have a lot of things for growing in containers.
The only seed you need to worry about GMO’s are for eggplant, zucchini and corn (well soy and alfafa but that’s not something most people would put in a garden). I do not think GMO potatoes and apples would be available yet, they just started w/these as far as I know.
Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. The only thing I would need to watch out for would be the zucchini (maybe the eggplant), but most of all, I want to make sure I don’t purchase seeds that would put money into Monsanto’s or Seminis’ pockets!
For sweet potatoes, I recommend buying a couple of organic ones from the store and growing the slips yourself. It’s fun.
Also, it’s not enough to just grow organically. You can buy organic, hybrid seed, for example. It’s about the integrity and uniqueness of the open pollinated seeds. They are unique because they have been saved and improved upon naturally from generation-to-generation, adapted to and for a specific region.
I recommend ordering a Serds of Change catalog just because they have incredibly beautiful pictures! There’s a New England company which you can get great prices on potatoes. If I find it, I’ll post it.
We use Territorial Seed. We live in the NE, and they specialize in cold-weather varieties, which is great for us. They have a lot of organic, but ALL are guaranteed non-GMO. They also have a lot of neat heirloom varieties, and a huge selection overall.
