We have never really done this formally. They have read some and they are 12 and 14. I really want to give them a “love” for science. The 14yr.old is immature and could be like my 12yr.old. They are not ready for Apologia General Sci. What Living books that are astounding and MUSTS and Fullbright books do I need to cover what they should have in the areas of Plant life, Human Body, Earth Sci. etc.? I really would rather use living books CM with easy experiments.
I don’t know what we should study? Should I ask them to pick something to give them started loving science? They don’t have preconceived notions concerning science. When I mention “pretty” spiders they say UCK! You know…they are girls. They need to get a general overview of many things (what books?) and then we can pick the things they really want to study.
What makes a great CM science? Living Books, Fulbright books for info? but are they more textbooky?, AND experiments to make it come alive! I love Aurora Lipper Super Charged that comes in my email box. I love the online classes she does. That would be neat in other area’s of science. I haven’t signed up for any of her online classes but she is only physics…such as rocketry, aero dynamics etc. and this is something they aren’t interested in at all though they might need to know a few basic things.
What is nice @ the Fulbright books– esp. for older kids— they can read through them and still learn slot– my 15 yo read through 2 of them last year. Then narrated here and there. And I had him do drawings and diagrams of things I thought were imortant.
Some kids just aren’t going to be science minded– that’s ok.
The Fulbright books are not to textbooky
For girls– you could start with the botany one and have them keep a pretty journal full of all their drawings.
Start in the summer when there are plenty of pretty things outside to draw— and above all else— if you really want them to get excited about it— they need to see ‘you’ getting excited about it– and doing it
I would agree that using Fulbright books for older kids is great. My daughter is 12 and is definitely not ready for Apologia General Science. I decided this coming year to read books and have her narrate or notebook. Right now for the summer we are using Pagoo and the study guide from Queen Homeschool to learn about hermit crabs and tidal pool life. We also let her get three hermit crabs to make it a little more interesting. I have loved the book so much that I am now creating a study guide to learn about snapping turtles with Minn of the Mississippi. I also purchased Marys Meadows for Nature Study from Queen Homeschool for some added science. Our daughter loves all things nature so this is the route we are taking for now.
I love your ideas! We live 5min. from the ocean and love the idea of the tidal pools. I use to have one of those like Pagoo books. I will look into Mary’s Meadows. I love the botany idea too
I thought it would be neat to do:
Nature and making the connection with writing and maybe art too somehow??
Best way for Elena to bring her out of doors is through her poetry, words, maybe drawing. The how’s? Examples?
For the 14yr.old words are hard for her. She could dictate something to me about what she see’s but I think I probably shouldn’t use that for spelling dictation? What do you think? I’m would love to do some interconnecting but I don’t know how.
Thanks
Cyndi
