I am having a battle with my son over this. He wants to do all his work on his bed. I said do written work at the table or desk, reading anywhere. My reasons are: posture, neatness, and a generally good habit to be into. Sitting up at a desk increases attention, IMO. I think sitting in your bed, doing your work slows you down; increases lethargy, etc.
I think that once you’re out of bed in the morning, unless a nap is required for special reasons, you stay out of bed until rest or bed time.
Pretty much where ever they want, as long as it’s up to standard. So computer work in the computer areas, reading/writing/math on the couch, their bed, table, “library” (our school room). I figure by high school, they should be able to take responsibility for things like that. Just my opinion, though.
We homeschool in our basement. There is an extra room down there which currently has my sewing table and some exercise equipment set up. I plan on having DD do most of her work there, once I get a desk or table set up for her. Her bedroom is so far away and I don’t want her isolated from the rest of us so much.
With that being said, I do let her read literature or history books in her bed. She sometimes does her math there as well. Next year she’ll be doing more work on her own and I like the idea of having her close by, yet having still having her own space. I want her doing science and language arts at a desk. She usually does writing/narrations on the computer. I’ll probably let her complete her reading assignments in bed or on the couch upstairs if she chooses.
We’ve discovered she does math best somewhere quiet. I’ve always let her do her math where she pleases.
So we are not there yet (long way off) but I was HS’ed growing up.
We had a school space in our basement and did school there. My brother wanted to do school in his room, and he did for a while in his senior year, but his grades went down a lot. He was not self motivated so would try to just “get by”. It was not a good senior year and he admits made his freshman year of college rough. My mom had warned him he better step up his game but he didn’t. It was just his personality to try to “coast”
I think it depends on the student. Some are self motivated and can do well on their own and in different settings, others do better with a bit more structure.
My high schooler does a lot on her bed, then comes downstairs to lounge on the couch or chair in really awkward ways to do biology usually (where we can chat about it). Occasionally at the table.
My son has a desk in his room so most of it is done there. His sits in his computer chair, not his bed, while he’s reading. He comes to our dining table for family subjects.
Both of my highschoolers (now graduated) have preferred doing work on their beds, or sometimes at the kitchen table, or sometimes on a couch. Sort of all over the house, now that I think of it! We are pretty casual about things like this and figured that by the time they were in high school they could choose their own study spots, unless there was some reason their choices were detrimental to them or us.
I don’t have a high schooler, but I can speak for myself. I do any serious study, such as to prepare lessons that I teach at church, on my bed or on the floor on my stomach. I’ve always done that. The second best location is sitting on the couch, with a notebook balanced on the arm rest. I’m loving having a tablet to use now, so I am not confined to the desk when I want to do research on the computer. I can’t explain why, except that it’s just more comfortable and I can think better.
As long he is meeting your expectations as to quality in his work, I say let him work wherever he is comfortable.
JMAC17, you are my people. I have loved lying on my stomach on the floor my whole life. I am nearly 48 and I still flop on the floor to read, write, cuddle my kids. I also fold kitchen linens sitting on the kitchen floor.
Thank you everyone for your responses. My son is normally a diligent and responsible worker. The problem comes in that his handwriting is atrocious (looks like an elementary student; hasn’t mastered cursive; holds his pencil with the wrong pincer grip so I have to get him the special gripper for his pencil) and his dawdles like no body’s business.
So, I don’t mind his reading books, listening to his stories, and watching his online classes in any position and anywhere he wants, but due to his slow pacing, poor penmanship, and really poor posture – slumping on his bed – he needs to do his written assignments at the desk.
He has finally agreed to do so with a larger desk, of which we have an extra one. If he wants a cushion on his chair, he can have one 🙂
We have a small house, so he’s just down the hall.
