Where do you all buy most of your books for school? Do you have a favorite book store or website? It seems I keep a running list of things we “need” that my library doesn’t have.
Mostly I go to library book sales, Half Price Books, yard sales, thrift stores, and the like. Anything I am in desparate need of by the beginning of the school year I buy off of Amazon or AbeBooks. I rarely use the library because it seems I can never predict when it will come, or if the state even has it (our county has practically none I need). I have a running book list I keep in Excel, both with books I already own (to avoid duplicates – which still sometimes happens <sigh> and the ones I still need. I have it going all through high school so I can grab when I see them, because that book may not be available in 4 or 5 years, especially ones that aren’t the regular “classics.”
Another happy Amazon user here — and I agree with jawgee, I can usually get a good price on whatever I want for a good used copy. Several years ago they didn’t do a good job regulating their third party sellers but they do a better job now and I am almost always happy with the purchase.
I also love paperback swap, although they don’t have what I want as frequently. It sure is nice when they do, though!
Amazon, Alibris, Book sales, library sales. I also got a lot of books in little used book stores in England when we were there, I found a lot of original copies of HE Marshall books and things like that there. I also have a lot on my Kindle and now I cannot stand to part with any of them, they are like good friends…….Linda
I’m very fortunate to have a homeschool bookstore here in my city, in fact I’m working there part time right now. We have just about anything a homeschooler could want for every type of homeschooler. They sell new and used so I get as much as I can there. I’ve also ordered from CBD.com and amazon.
CBD.com is Christianbook.com and I usually have a coupon code for free shipping with $35 purchase. You need to sign up for their mailing list to get the codes sent to you. Rainbow Resource is good if you need a lot because it is free shipping over $150. I also use Vision Forum sales, Amazon for both used and new, and e-bay for book lots. Also Friends of the library sales, Goodwill, yard sales, and used curriculum sales.
Also love Amazon and we sign up for Prime for three years at a time. I use Amazon so much that I quickly cover the cost of Prime and enjoy 2-day shipping on nearly everything … sometimes even used deal books. Also, Alibris, though their shipping can get outrageous, and Abe.
I also look at homeschoolclassifieds.com, and I joined the Yahoo CM curriculum group which send, me an email when new items are listed.
It pays to look at all sources, the same seller is listed on more than one website usually, and I found Dangerous Journey on ebay cheaper than the others, and it was the same seller. half.com and amazon.com are great too because you can make a wish list and they will notify you when there is a book for sale with your preferred price that you will pay.
