Where do I start?

I am not new to Charlotte Mason.  I have read and re-read countless books, articles, curriculums etc on her and her teaching methods and views on a child’s life.  We even did Living Books curriculum etc last year.  Although, we also had a brand new baby last year, I felt we did okay, but of course we could have done more with the curriculum.

So, this year thinking I needed to have everyone independent or as much as their ages allow, We went TOTALLY the other way.  They have workbooks and some have textbooks etc.  We do Science together and of course read.  HOwever, unlike last year, we aren’d doing any academics together anymore.  Needless to say, we are burned out already and miss working together.

I have purchased SCM History Module 2 and waiting for the spine books etc, to get it going.  My question is, can I start with just History the CM way to ease back into it?  Then work in the other things?  They already do copy work etc.  We are starting Nature Study this week.  Part of me feels like taking a “fun” tour of school this week and getting out the blankets to put outside (we are in Wisconsin and its been in the 70’s and 80’s) work on habits and character and read and read and do Nature study and read and enjoy each other again.  Is that a good place to start?  I guess the hardest person to “Deschool” sometimes is ourselves?  I’ve been homeschooling since my now 7th grader was in 1st and I still doubt myself….

    Momto5,

I think your gut feeling to throw a blanket outside and read, do nature study, work on habits, etc. is spot on. From what you’re saying, it doesn’t seem like you want to “ease back into CM”; rather it seems like you’ve been missing CM and want to get right back into it. I hate it that you may have spent some big bucks on workbooks, textbooks, and curricula you aren’t liking, but please don’t feel fenced in by all of it just because you’ve spent money on it. You can always use what you like now and save the rest for another time; or you can just post what you don’t like on Paperback Swap and use the credits there to get more CM-friendly spines. In my two years of homeschooling, I have learned to go with my gut when doubts and questions start creeping in. Only you know what is best for your family!

    Blessings,

    Thanks Lindsey,

I think I thought about easing into it because we are so far on the other side this year.  Interesting, that what I thought was going to be easier for our family is making everyone miserable. lol

Thankfully, the curriculum we chose wasn’t very expensive and I can still use aspects of it. The rest can actually be returned for my money back 😉
