When to do Grammar?

I am thinking that I will do Grammar Revolution with my children.  I really like the idea of 1 year and be done and the ease of use/understanding that missceegee has mentioned in her reviews.  My question is when do I do this?  If it is only one year, do I really need to do it before grade 8?  My oldest will be grade 6 next year, and I had been planning to add something in, but she struggles with dyslexia and we are still working on that.  I don’t want to add something else if it isn’t necessary.  Would I be better to go ahead and start next year and take it slow?  Or grade 7?  We are using SCM’s Spelling Wisdom.  She is in the first book about lesson 20.  So, she is getting exposure.  When do I really need to do grammer?

    Thanks

Pangit, middle school is the perfect time for grammar, imo. I would work on reading before worrying about grammar. DD14 did grammar in 7th/8th. DS11 will do it in 6th.

Concur.  It’s a perfect middle-school-age project.  Anywhere 6th-8th that works for your child.

Is there any downside to doing it earlier if it’s understood? I was thinking of using Get Smart over 2 years starting next year with my then 4th grader. DH isn’t sold enough on CM methods to not do grammar, and what we used this year was time consuming and she didn’t really understand it anyway. I felt like she understood the sample lesson for Get Smart better than anything she’s done before.

Hmmm. Grammar is a finite body of information that need not be covered yearly. It’s rather abstract which is a reason why younger kids may struggle with it. They simply aren’t developmentally ready for it. Each family is individual & you need to honor your husband in this, but my recommendation would be to wait. If you feel you must do something, perhaps English for the Thoughtful Child or something similar can be done orally with ease and not much time.

Simply Grammar is another gentle introduction.  You can even stop at the point she gets confused for that year. Once a week may be enough.

Cozy Grammar is another option.  Our public library has it.

Thank you.  I’ll continue to wait right now.  I didn’t want to be skipping something that I should be doing with her, but also was feeling that it might just add stress to the day.

What is the advantage of doing something like Simply Grammar over Get Smart Grammar? It looks like they essentially cover the same things, just in different ways.

My son is nine, we are using Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl. We talk. Just talk about the lessons unless he wants to write something about a picture lesson. Some examples…With what kind of letter is the word “I” always written? Why? With what kind of letter does the first word in every sentence begin? Why? What is the name (title) of the picture we are looking at. Sometimes I will ask him to copy a couple of lines and not do the dictation (we do dictation with spelling). Then we talk about what did he need to start the first word of the sentence with. This works great for us. We do a lesson a day. Nice and short and no tears!
