Hi! My name is Amber and I have been lurking for awhile now. I have four kids, ages 15, 10, 8, and 5. I homeschool the younger three. I started incorporating living books and oral narration in our school day last year and the results have been amazing. My 10 year old’s reading comprehension and spelling have improved so much! This coming school year I am going to jump into the Charlotte Mason way with both feet. I believe it’s the perfect for our family.

So (finally!) here is my question: Do the kids need to narrate after EVERY reading? And do they do it immediately after they’ve finished reading, or once a week?

If this has been answered already, please point me to the post. I looked around and couldn’t find it. I am also going to spend the summer reading Miss Mason’s books. The answer is probably in there, but I just wanted to talk to y’all. 😉

    Thank you so much!

Hi Amber. We narrate to some degree after each lesson or session but we don’t narrate on leisure reading (unless, of course they just want to tell me about a book they’re reading). The narration ideas on this website are most helpful. (Just go to the homepage and click on ‘narration’.) Sometimes we do a simple verbal summary and other times we use the more elaborate ideas, based on the subject at hand.

Also, on the Community forum page at the very bottom you’ll see a section titled CM Specifics; within that section there is a sub-category for previous narration posts. I’ve found lots of helpful advice by browsing in that area.

    Have a blessed day!

Hi, Amber. Glad you spoke up. It is so nice to meet new people even if it is only over cyberspace.

We don’t narrate everything. Mostly history or nature readers. I would like to do it everyday but just don’t seem to “make it happen”. So it averages out to be three days a week. BUT I am a newbie with narration so I might not be the best model.

It sounds like you did something right if your dc are doing so well with it..I might need your advice. What is your secret? 🙂

By the way Amber, you mentioned that you are going to be reading CM’s writings. At the very top of the Forum page under latest discussions there is a topic titled Charlotte’s Original Writings. Several of us have expressed an interest in reading volume 5 on a schedule and then discussing it as we read. You can check that out too and see if you’d like to participate. I’m pretty excited about it!!! 😀

Shelly, all I did was throw his spelling book away and started Spelling Wisdom. (Spelling was a nightmare for him) Then I assigned him living books. I also shortened the time spent on lessons. It was taking him over an hour for math. I almost cried when the lady who I have test my kids told me his scores. He jumped over two grade levels in Math and Language Arts. Everything seemed to click for him this year, but I also know it’s because I trusted in Charlotte Mason. I am very pleased!! 🙂

Oh Amber we may be kindred spirits. I also threw out my ds math book and as for spelling…”Spelling, What is spelling?” I didn’t do anything in spelling but this year we are starting Spelling Wisdom (and All About Spelling-just for some phonics). I haven’t done much in phonics or spelling and my son is going into 4th grade! YIKES!!

You have given me hope that he isn’t sooooo far behind. Ok I just read your post again and I didn’t mean to make it sound like you threw out your math book…I might be the only crazy one but I am secure in that. 🙂

What a blessing to have such good news after having your dc tested. Congratulations!!

    Shelly
