In our current history studies, we are just beginning the 1800s time frame. If I wanted to make a switch to the SCM history, what would you recommend? I have a highschooler and a kindergartener. The SCM Module 5 goes up to 1850. But when I looked at what is covered, we have covered most of it. Module 6 starts at 1850, so we would lose a good chunk of history if we went with that one.
I have considered just continuing our studies until we get to around 1850 and then starting Module 6 – and some of you gave me some good tips on how to implement Module 6. But then we would be at least halfway through our school year and switching to the Module 6 guide at that point would add an additional 36 week schedule.
I haven’t used the new American history spines yet, but would it work to maybe just use the Module 5 spine and cover readings from 1800-1850? Maybe read it daily until done? I don’t have the book so don’t know how long it would take….

So maybe just not buying the Module 5 guide and instead just read the spine for those couple of weeks then move to Module 6? That’s an idea! We are closer to around 1812. When I look at the table of contents for Module 5, we would probably want to pick around somewhere around Lesson 163. So it looks like we would only need maybe around 2 weeks before moving into Module 6, right?
This is why we homeschool year round ;0). We start when we start, and begin new things when we are finished. But to answer your question:
I would say just get the spines from Mod. 5 and pick up where you are. Most of the additional reading books recommended by SCM would be at your library if they aren’t in your home library already. You are only looking at maybe $30 for the spines ($20 if you choose ebooks).
Yep. If it’s lesson 163 it wouldn’t take long at all because that’s only 17 lessons left and not all are history and some are exam and make-up days. I’d just have the high schooler read those and then start Module 6 if it were me, I think:) And as ServingwithJoy said you could add some of the readers if you have the time…..

Thank you all so much for the suggestions! You know, I just realized when looking at the samples that the Module 5 spines are Vol. 1 and the Module 6 spines are Vol. 2. I don’t think I want to buy Vol. 1 if I’m only going to be using just a few of the lessons at the end. So maybe I could look through the resources I have and see if I can put together a plan for 2 weeks to cover that time frame up to 1850 and then just buy Module 6. And 2 weeks would give time for me to get Module 6 ordered.
