So, it looks like I might be able to buy a couple of things. (not too much). We spend very little money on homeschooling, but I often am wishing I could get this or that…. but the odd occasion I get a bit of money to spend, I never know what I should get….
So – keeping in mind that we have our math curriculum (and cuisinaire rods), and have the history spine we are going to use… what would you buy?
A few things I’m looking at…. (I can’t get all of them!)
the All-Day Seminar from here (would love to buy many many things from here… sigh)
Map Trek from Knowledge Quest
Timeline Figures from Homeschool in the Woods
Draw and Write through History
Mapping the World by Heart
So, what would you buy? Or is there something else that you would buy that I’m missing?
I do admire the timeline figures from homeschool in the woods – I have one of their units and it comes with some figures and they are lovely. Wish I had them all…I would get them on cdrom if I was getting them…
I have Map Trek and have yet to use it:( If you have better plans for it for you kiddos that would be great, but my kids are 12, 8, and 5 and have not used it, shame on me, I guess.
I have looked at the figures for hs in the woods, but just could not commit, but it would be a great investment, on cdrom, of course. My 12 yo did not want them as he prefers to write in our history characters and my 8yo thinks his creative creations are better than what anyone else could produce. So, I just didn’t by them.
Now, the All Day Seminar has been worth every penny:) I think I was able to narrow down my purchases by purchasing it….hsing can be so inexpensive if you allow it to be, which you already know:) I didn’t until I watched the seminar.
Looks like I probably won’t get to buy anything at this point – although maybe in a bit….. I was able to buy a few things from my church that will be helpful….
As I did ask on a couple of boards, thought I’d give the summary of what people have said…
All Day Seminar – most people really seemed to like this. Just not sure how valuable it would be for me as it is overall a summary of CM methods, which I think I have a fair handle on… but I’m sure I could still find good value in it. Also, I sent my husband links to the things I was interested in, and this one got a Yes from him… (hey, maybe he would even watch some of it? I can dream….) – this is still a maybe for me… and am thinking of doing the “seminar” thing with it….
Map Trek – although I had heard of this product from a review from someone that liked it… nobody on the places I posted seemed to use it much…. so I probably won’t get.
Timeline Figures – I still think they look pretty good and some people like them – but I think we can do fine with google or other sources… (or even better, drawing our own pictures) The value with the timeline figures is a consistent style… but with no Canadian figures, we would lose that advantage anyway. So probably not.
Draw and Write through History – I’m still not sure on these… my kids did like the Draw Write Now books which seem similar (are they from the same people?). I go back and forth on the “draw this by doing this, then this, then this” versus the “draw what you see” side of how drawing should be done…. But I do think this is high on my list. It looks like the last few books are very heavy on American History…. is there much world history topics in these???
Mapping the World by Heart – have read a few independent reviews from people that seem to love it…. but haven’t heard much from friends on the message boards, so don’t think many people have it…? Noticed it is for kids a bit older (around 9 or 10+), so will be holding off until my kids are older.
Yesterdays Classics bookset – Most people I know that have the set seem to love it. Some of the books apparently can’t be found for free on the internet (yet) even though they are out of copy-right… many can be. But apparently the formatting/pictures included/ and other ebook features (table of contents works etc) can be worth it. I know that I had grabbed a sample from Amazon of “An Island Story” from them because my free version had too many typos – and their sample chapters were really good. But that said… the $99 sale price is more than I generally have to spend, and I am pretty good at finding good quality free ebooks…. so I’ll have to decide at the time, should I ever have that much at once to make a purchase….
I’ll chime in and say that I think the All Day Seminar is worth owning. I own it and it is certainly the kind of thing (along with the notebook that goes with it) that you will refer to again and rewatch. It is also a great resource to share with friends who are interested in CM. I hope to be able to host a viewing seminar in my home one of these days :o) But you know what you need right now so I’m sure you will make a good decision for your family.
