Wanting to get a US, World, and maybe Ancient but they are so expensive for the big ones $100. Is there a more frugal way? Thank you soo much for your imput.

Hi Kristi,
I found a very inexpensive set, I think it was at Costco – it was a set of three maps for around $17. It included the US, the World and North America. They are laminated so I let my girls write on them with transparency markers. They are a very good size – the largest being 51.5 by 37.5 inches. They are made by mapsinternational.co.uk Hope that’s helpful!

I have the costco ones and like them, but wanted a smaller size. The ones I have are world and USA by GeoSafari.

I bought a map of Europe for a reasonable price from National Geographic. They have many maps to choose from.

We bought a two pack of maps (one US, one world) at Barnes and Noble a few years ago. I then bought some sheets of insulation board at the hardware store, cut to be just a bit bigger than the maps, covered them with fabric, used ribbon on the back as a hanger, and attached the maps to the front with very heavy duty double stick tape. It’s great because there is only one nail hole in the wall and the girls can look at them all they want. If they do happen to pull them off the wall, they won’t get hurt since the foam insulation is so light weight.

Hi Kristi,
We have the pull down maps that you find in schools. We got a name from the local public school and the guy came to our home and had a big catalog of different maps. You can get them layered in the roll up. We bought 3-a world map, US map, and a “progressive history” US map. It was expensive-I think $500- but so worth it. They will last forever! I like being able to have them rolled up and just pull them down when we need them. We actually have them hung right over a window.

PS-I know this isn’t very frugal but I thought I would share in case people didn’t know they would sell these to homeschoolers.

Wow, thank you for the ideas! I am going to check into them all. Danielle, love the roll up idea – maybe I will be able to find a way to “make” these. Also, the foam board, so it doesn’t get torn and I don’t have t mark up the walls with tape and nails. Personalized with material — Oh love it -these really sparked my creative side ;)Let you know what I find,

Tape that doesn’t mar your walls and comes off easily.

Are the costco maps on costco.com? I don’t have a membership. But my mom does so I can order them on line if I can find them…

We lucked out and found the big pull down ones the schools use for only $5 a piece.. The elementary school here was closing and we went to the sale. I got the U.S. map and a world map. They had a state map but I passed on it. They are mounted on our wall and rolled up out of the way. I LOVE them. We have found SO many big ticket items that I wouldn’t have been able to purchase new, for only a few $$ at garage sales. My husband found me one of those HUGE double sided wipe off board for under $10. It’s on a stand and has the marker holder on the bottom of it. We have been extremely blessed..
Someone on another board said that they made their own pull down maps buy attaching a map to one of those roll up home window shades. They said it worked great.

I have the M Series maps, both the world and the US. I bought the rolled ones not the folded ones. They are nice and big and are laminated, but it’s not stiff. They’ve held up through one move and 4 boys. For the price (like $10 or so) I think they’re great.

Just another idea…I purchased some maps the other day off of Rainbow Resource. They have some maps that are in tablet style that are a nice size. The child rips one off and on the front is the actual complete map, and on the back is a map outline. I thought this would work great for map study. The child could study the completed one, and have the torn off one flipped over to fill in anything they remember. I think it will also be nice to use with more than one child at a time. I purchased some of Africa. Just a thought.
Our wall maps I picked up from Staples years ago for cheap. Then our homeschool office laminated them for a little bit of nothing. They’ve held up for going on 5 yrs now.
