we are just finishing up the little house series. i am so terribly sad to see it end.  (we are skipping The First Four Years for now for various reasons after reading reviews).  so, now what?  we have enjoyed them so immensely, i am afraid to choose the next series for fear of extreme disappointment.  any suggestions?  (the books will be read to a 7 yo and 5 yo)…

Have you heard about the All-of-a-Kind Family series?

How funny – we are in the EXACT same prediciment!  We have however read the All – if a Kind Family series – your kids will LOVE it!  So here is a 2nd vote for that!  Any other ideas for us?

My girls are the same ages as yours – 6.5 and not quite 5 and they both really enjoyed The Little Princess as well as The Secret Garden.  There’s another book by the same author – Little Lord Fauntleroy (sp???) so that’s next!

I like the Sonlight read-alouds.  They usually have lots of variety and include books that I would never have thought of.  Some of our favorites from that age range were  “My Father’s Dragon” and “Dr. Doolittle”.  We found Dr. Doolittle on tape, read by Martin Short and it’s fantastic!

My kids are 8,6,5, and 3 and they likes My Fathers Dragon.  Also the two others that go with it.  I’ve read Stuart Little to them earlier this year and they really enjoyed that as well.  I haven’t decided what is next.  (We took a break to read advent/Christmas books).

My DD5 also really liked All of a Kind Family, My Father’s Dragon, and Stuart Little that we read this year.  Another possibility might be In Grandma’s Attic and others in the series.  These are also stories about a small town/farming family in the 1800s…so might go over quite well with little girls who loved the Little House books.   She also really liked the original Winnie the Pooh and the Milly Molly Mandy Storybook during this past year.

    Hope that helps!

Not a series, but what about “Understood Betsy”?

The Boxcar Children has 4 children- 2 girls and 2 boys. If you haven’t read them before, they are very adventureous!

Caddie Woodlawn.  Our family thought it was even better than the Little House Series!

That’s why most of us have read the series multiple times. We all feel despondent when we finish These Happy Golden Years! Wink
