Okay, I am having a hard time deciding what to do.
I have a 2nd grader and a K (though she is mostly doing 1st/2nd grade work)
We will finish Outdoor Secrets at by Christmas. And then I am trying to decide what to do after that. Here are my options that I’ve come up with:
1) Read Liberty Nature Reader 1 and watch different science videos and read science books from the library for a variety of information.
2) 106 Days of Creation. Doing it 5x/wk we could finish it with only going a couple weeks into our summer break.
Then Next year, what would I follow it with?
1)106 Days alone.
2)106 Days with Considering God’s Creation
3)Considering God’s Creation alone
4)Apologia
5)Queen’s Discovering Nature Curriculum
I had been leaning towards doing the Liberty Nature Reader after Christmas and next year CGC alone. But I hated to miss 106 Days. I was going to do CGC alone so that we would go through and use all of the curriculum. Now I just don’t know again. What would you do? Money is definately an issue . . . but once I know what I want to do, I can try and see if we have the funds.
We are really enjoying the 106 days. I wasn’t sure at first I think because we had started Mod 1 and 106 days at the same time, and the the first little bit kept going over and over the Creation at the same time, but everything progressed, lol. You could definitely just read nature books and watch the nature movies for the next few months. Some fun ones to add that are really good would be the Thorton Burgess books, especially if you could get pictures to color of the animals you are reading about. My girls love that.
I think that if you could do it, try 106 Days next year and then progress onto a different mix – be it 106/CGC, CGC, Apologia, whatever. 106 is a fun hands-on type book, and I really like CGC for additional explaination – and it has lots of cutting and pasting pages which my girls like. Be aware though, that 106 Days calls for addtitional living books to be read, so check out the bookstore at the 106 Days resources needed page. Then check your library for those titles or good substitutes before you have to spend money. (It does use the Liberty Nature Reader 1.)
I wonder if you could do 106 days with Considering God’s Creation starting now and spread it over the next year and a half? That way you could add in the other CGC lessons that aren’t referenced in 106 Days, without having to miss 106 altogether, or try to rush through it in half a year? Just a thought.
I don’t know where you live but last year we built a birdfeeder, then kept a dailey log of what kind of birds were visiting. It is nature study but makes a nice ongoing observation project.
We’re in a very similar situation. I have a 1st and 2nd grader and we’re finishing Outdoor Secrets next week. As of now, I plan to read the Christian Liberty Nature Readers and Thornton Burgess books. In about late Feb., early March, I plan to start the The Burgess Bird book. We live in WI and that’s about when the birds start returning so I thought it may fit well. I feel like holding off on starting another curriculum this school year unless one of the kids really begs to begin something else. I did purchase Nature Porfolio Throughout the Year and our 2nd grader just brought it up today. So we’ll see what happens
I don’t know if this will help, but we are on our 2nd year using 106 Days and added Considering God’s Creation this year. I enjoy slowing it down and reading lots of books and watching a few movies on each topic. I’m not sure what we are doing next year though (oldest will by 4th grade). I don’t want to start Apologia just yet. We may go back to nature study using AO then use 106 Days one more time for my youngest to get something out of it before moving on!
I would not miss 106 Days. I am looking forward to doing it again in the next few years once we have more school age kids. We first did it with a dd7 and dd4. Ditto on Thornton Burgess and you can get free ebooks like The Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock so you wouldn’t have to pay a dime.
Thanks everyone!! I like the idea of starting 106 Days and CGC and doing it more in-depth and spreading out over 1 1/2 years. I think I’ll look into that for now. Then if it gets to be too much I can drop back to just the Christian Liberty Nature Reader and books/video’s from the library. Our library does have some good nature and science videos. Though we will be moving in March and I’m not sure where. That does make it hard to choose which resources to buy and which to get at the library.
We did Burgess Bird book last year. The girls had a lot of fun with that. They enjoyed the stories and coloring the pictures I found online.
