What to do for history

    We are currently doing a modified version of AO but im at a bit of an impasse and not sure of the way forward. Its doing my head in!!! My daughter has done ancients and a scant bit of middle ages and then this year we have finished Foster’s the World of William Penn. But know im not sure if i should get her back onto the proper AO level (4) and continue with George Washingtons world this new year (it follows along chronologically) OR go back and do SOTW 2 (middle ages/reformation, easier to read one great big sweep) OR do Foster’s Colombus and sons THEN World of Captain John Smith then leap forward and pick up GWW? I know im probably making this more complicated than it needs to be but im ‘worried’ about her missing the middle ages. She’s 11. Ha. Sounds ridiculous doesnt it?

    I just CAN’T DECIDE!!! Any and all suggestions gratefully received.

    I should add that if I do go back and do middle ages with the Foster books I will ALWAYS be out of step with AO.

    We at SCM recommend continuing forward in chronological order from where you are.  It helps to keep an order to history.

    Thank you for that. Yes thats what my husband suggests but i just cant get the thought out of my mind that by the time she comes back to Mid. Ages and Renaissance she will not be familiar enough with it to fully understand the meatier more detailed books she will encounter in high school. So should i have a second stream going simultaneously or am i just over thinking all of this?

    I think you are over thinking it. The “meatier” books she will read in high school should still have the same basic information found in the books for younger students, just more details pertaining to that information.

    If you want her to have some exposure to the people and events from the Middle Ages and Renaissance and Reformation, have available for her free reads biographies and historical fiction from that time period. No need to do anything “formal.”

    I agree with Karen, I think you are over thinking it, and I have been there before. Trying to plan everything out through 12th grade and my oldest was in 2nd grade, haha.

    There is so much time to learn and honestly I don’t know if I ever learned about the middle ages when I was growing up, and that is okay too 🙂 I am having fun learning about things now with my kids. Don’t feel you have to get to everything, that will not happen, the goal is a life long learner who enjoys learning beyond the school years.

    Thank you all. Its been driving me insane but i thought about it long and hard last night and Ive just decided to move forward (as you suggested Tamara). I think my problem is I actually have too many resources and I want to use them all! (So thats a lesson in its self. Too many books can be as much of a hinderance as too few.😉)

    So I’ll just move forward with the AO rotation and have her use GWW and add some bedtime readalouds as Karen suggested, to give her some exposure. Phew.

    NOW I feel I can enjoy our vacation. Thanks all so much for your input😊
