My son just completed MFW Adventures and wants to continue studying American History. I originally planned to begin MOH in 3rd grade. I also considered SOTW but I did not care for it ( I know that’s an unpopular opinion). Now I trying to figure out what history curriculum to use. I don’t really want to repeat what he’s already learned. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Hey!  I was wondering if you have considered Truthquest.  The series of American History for grades 1-5 is excellent.  There are 3 guides–and you would probaby be on guide 2 or 3.  Go on their website and explore.  The teacher’s guides give nice commentary on the topics in sequence (ie-WWi, the Depression, WWII), teach kids to think about worldview, and then good living book suggestions for each grade.  I would skip the “spines” as they can be dry, but the books suggested by grade are excellent, and most can be found at your local library.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I looked at Homeschool in the Woods materials at convention. I didn’t purchase it for this year, but it is one I would consider in the future. It is very hands-on. If you go to their website http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com, you can click on Time Travelers for US History and there is a video telling about the curriculum. I think it looks good.

We used TruthQuest combined with Time Traveler….love them both!

I also don’t care for STOW, however, we enjoyed MOH as a read aloud.

Why not continue American History with SCM module 6 for modern times?  We loved the book selections and the Stories of the Nations and Stories of America vol. 2.

We are using Cantering the Country this year.  There are a lot of topics to pick from, but we will mainly focus of birds, geography, and biographies of famous Americans for history.
