Last year we mostly followed the Year 2 schedule from Charlotte Mason Help. This year it just looks like too much, even with DD reading some on her own, but I’m not sure what to cut. I’m particular stuck on choosing literature/tales. This is the link to the full Year 3 schedule if anyone wants to look at it. http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com/2009/07/year-3-program-and-books.html

Read Aloud Tales Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare by Nesbit (2nd half) Heroes by Charles Kingsley Pilgrim’s Progress Part 2 by John Bunyan Chronicles of Narnia by Lewis *Water Babies by Charles Kingsley **The Princess and the Goblin ***The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling
I think we will skip Beautiful Tales from Shakespeare. We read the first half of a simplified version of Pilgrim’s Progress (Pilgrim’s Progress in Words of One Syllable) last year and I would like to finish that. I’d like to choose 2 more to read aloud, but can’t decide which, and can’t decide whether to have DD read the others herself or just drop them. I’m not a big fan of Kipling, or at least his Just So Stories…is he a must-do?
Additional Reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett (girl choice) Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett (boy choice) Treasures of the Snow by St. John At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll Swallows and Amazons by Ransome Black Beauty by Anna Sewell Misty of Chincoteague by Henry Sea Star by Henry Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Henry The Family under the Bridge by Carlson Strawberry Girl by Lowry Ginger Pye by Estes Trumpet of the Swan by White Burgess Animal Stories series- choose any Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Fleming, then watch the movie Wheel on the School by Dejong Cricket in Times Square by Selden The Bears of Blue River by Major Sugar Creek Gang Series by Hutchins (boys especially like this) Parables from Nature by Gatty (difficult, but good Sunday book for discussion) Bambi by Felix Salten
I was wanting to chose 3 of these for read alouds and let her read the rest herself or listen to whatever’s available on Librivox as audiobooks. She’s a strong reader and has already read some of them (specifically all the horse books and a few of the others). Any suggestions on which to choose for RAs?
I can’t imagine a child this age reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and not missing all the wonderful plays on the English language. I’d hold off on that one.
