I was wondering what some of you utilize the computer for ? Currently , we do not do much computer based learning . I have 2 apps on my Ipad – marble math and stack the countries. We just use those occasionally as a filler but not as a core piece.
I am thinking ahead to next school year, and I think my kids are wanting more variety….. to try a subject or something done on the computer on a regular basis. Any recommendations?
My DS is 6 and I try not to use the computer too often, but foreign languages are where I most rely on the computer. At the moment he watches downloads of Spanish or French shows. We also like to look up sign language online.
There are so many great sites to supplement any subject, so even if you don’t go with a computer based subject you’ll be able to add some computer time in somewhere.
I like it for foreign languages because he can hear the language spoken by a native speaker, and it gives me a break from teaching.
My 13YO uses the computer very often for several different subjects, a few of which he takes online. He spends more time on the computer this year than he ever has in the past, but he is into high school mode.
My 9YO, though, uses the computer just for Math (Teaching Textbooks), Sheppard Software (map drills) and Xtra Math (math drills). That ends up being about 30 minutes/day.
All of mine (8-14) use the computer for math (Teaching Textbooks). The older two will do online classes next year. They use their Kindles for foreign language and some books. The 8-year-old uses the computer for Ooka Island and other reading/learning games. they all have ‘educational’ games on the Kindle that they can use with permission (after all regular work is done, at the doctor, etc).
We never used to use the computer at all for schooling but as the kids have hit some of the higher grades we found it helpful to utilize it for more subjects. So last year we started using it more and this year we are using it the most we ever have.
Dd in yr 7 uses it for typing, Word Roots program, spanish(iPad), current events, and also for researching as well as for suplementing things like science at times as well.
Ds in yr 5 uses it for Reading Detective program, typing, spanish(iPad), current events. He will also be starting a programming course soon as well.
Dd in year 3 is only using the computer to do Explode the Code Online. She uses the iPad for Spanish and also sometimes does learning games using the iPad as well.
the only things that my kids do on the computer that are everyday are typing for about 10 min, sometimes more, and spanish on the iPad. Spanish only takes about 10 min. at most, usually.
My 2nd – 5th graders use it to learn typing. Middle schoolers use it to continue typing skills, grammar skills and typed narration. My high schoolers use it for typed work, Khans videos, grammar and watching math videos (MUS).
Thank you ladies !! I wrote all of them down & will look them up on the Internet . I have not used Shepard software in over a year & forgot all that it offers . Since we are studying ancient Egypt , I had my son do the Africa map drill . He really enjoyed it . Thx again !
We are also wanting to incorporate more computer based learning in our homeschool next year. So far, we have only used Typing Instructor for kids. This next school year we are planning on starting Teaching Textbooks for math and Essentials in Writing for grammar/writing.
However, the 8th grader has done an online literature discussion and will be doing an online mythology class this May, and a fall online class on using GIMP.
Sometimes, usually in the summer, I have kids who are ready do Typing Instructor for Kids to start working on their typing abilities. But that is not a year round, daily thing.
We have tried online things like Mathletics in the past as well. We just tend to prefer offline learning.
