So, I’m confused as to what my 11 yo ds (6th grade in the fall) should be doing for science…
Here’s what I have so far. He’s finishing up the 106 Days and uses the suggested material for his age from the Considering God’s Creation. We have not used the entire book, just what was suggested. He has taken several outside classes for science from various teachers/classes offered in our community, as well as several science kits. My plan was to finish up 106 Days and then move him into something heavier. Should that be from one of the suggested Apologia texts (which we’ve never used), Nature Study (which we haven’t done either) or continue with some living books/experiments/kits until he hits 7th grade?? We go through a charter and will need to supply samples 1x per quarter, but that’s not usually a problem.
I suppose I had not looked through the entire curriculum guide until 2-3 weeks ago and now I wish I had, but I really did not fully understand or appreciate this method and was utilizing the site for its great resources:) Now that we’ve been converting over more and more I see that I have really missed the boat on some things.
Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

I was going to add that he gets at least 2 hours per day outside. He spends time with his little brother outside while I work with my middle boy and in the afternoon I make sure they all have time together outside, weather permitting:)

My first thought would be to keep doing nature study once a week and have him do one of the Jeannie Fulbright science courses (also from Apologia) to help him make the transition to what he will be doing in 7th grade.

So, we haven’t actually done the Nature Study, but would love to, especially for my younger boys (7 and 4). So, if I understand you right I could do:
One Elementary Apologia topic and
Continue 106 Days (we’re on the last day so should we finish this before beginning the Apologia?) and
The living books we are accumulating
and the Nature Study?
Does that seem too separate or too much or do you think they will flow together? Science is not my favorite, but I try. The 106 Days is so easy to follow, but we will be finished with that at some point and will need to do something else anyway:) Thanks in advance for the help.

Our family does the Apologia books and we love them. We are on #4 right now and my kids are loving it so much they will sit and listen forever (we are doing land animals). I know my son likes these books and my goal is to continue on with them through high school. Also, we are always sending my kids outside (I have a couple who would rather play inside AHHH) and we are out there as much as possible. Our favorite part of homeschooling is seeing things in nature do there thing.. like yesterday.. you grouse were out back and well they were working on making some babies.. the kids thought it was great and we didn’t focus on that part but on how long it will be before mom lays her eggs and how many there might be, what we could put out for food.. etc. Your son will find tons of things to learn and look up if you’re watching for it. Yes, I would say finish 106 Days first, then start on either a Jeannie Fulbright course or just living books — whichever you prefer — and do nature study one day a week.
