We are using Nora Gaydos’ (similar to BOB books) beginning readers right now. My dd is on long vowels and “silent E.” What books did you use after this? McGuffy or some other primers?
We have used and loved the Pathway Readers. First Steps is the first one, then Days Go By and More Days Go By. We love that they’re wholesome stories and reinforce good attitudes and actions. Plus they’re all about one family, so the kids feel a friendship with the main characters and want to keep reading to find out what happens to them.
We never used the Teacher book or activity books or anything else with them. We just sat together and had the student read the story aloud. I helped them figure out any words they got stuck on.
The story books list any new words that will be used in each story, so you could go over them ahead of time if you wanted to. I’m doing that with my youngest. The other girls were fine with sounding them out as they came to them.
Thank you, Sonya. I checked around and your link to RR has the cheapest price! RR has free shipping on orders over $25 right now until Tuesday, so I wanted to know if I should get the workbooks along with it or not. I just got the first few books to qualify for the shipping. They are very inexpensive, so I actually ended up getting all of first and most of second grade for under $30 shipped! They look extremely charming and fun and I don’t have to preview content. I especially like the fact that I start the story, then she finishes. Maybe she can even read to little sis some too. Again, that you for your wisdom. You have been such a blessing in our lives.
