What microscope?

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about good microscopes for beginning nature study. Nothing too fancy–we have one five-year-old, a three-year-old, and a one-year-old.

The two older boys are more impressed with machines than nature. They’re just not that into it yet. I was thinking maybe a microscope (a kind of machine) would get them to look at the amazing things around them in a new way.

However, I have no background in science and am wholly at a loss to choose from all the microscopes available. Something sturdy yet capable of good magnification without making things totally unrecognizable. Something affordable…

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    Hi Kari,

We have the Brock Magiscope and the kids love it. You can take it right out into the field with you.

We also have the Bock Magiscope and love it for PreK til a more powerful one is needed for HS sciences. The Brock has more powerful lenses that can be bought, but I think in HS, it’s a good idea to learn how to work a regular microscope. We’ve had our Magiscope for 9 years and it’s like new.
