Okay, maybe you could answer a few questions for me about Jim Weiss audio books. Does he treat Bible stories as fairy tales and fables or does he tell them as historical events? Is he respectful of Christian values in his audios? Are there any that I should avoid? We are studying ancients right now. Do you have a favorite audio from the ancient history period? Finally, what is your favorite Jim Weiss audio out of all of them?
We have the Old Testament Stories, and it is well done. I don’t see anything disrepectful about it.
We love Galileo and the Stargazers! We also have Thomas Jefferson, Gone West, and Abraham Lincoln all are good IMHO! And Sweet Dreams is a very peaceful restful CD! The only one I have not cared for is A Christams Carol. But that is MO
Jim Weiss is a huge favorite with my boys (my now 22yo loved them growing up) and they’re big favorites in my library as well. You can’t go wrong with any that we’ve listened to.
We haven’t studied ancient history yet, so I can’t really help you there.
My all time favorite is Old Yeller. It was the first Jim Weiss recording I had ever heard. I can’t hear it read by anyone else now. Galilileo and the Stargazers, ,Sherlock Holmes, Rascal, the Jungle Book, and Giants are my son’s favorites. He says Rascal is his #1 favorite.
We have many Jim Weiss recordings, and have borrowed others from the library. For the ancients, I liked Greek Myths, and I have also liked The Cat of Bubastes. I have found him very respectful, and so much fun. I don’t remember how old your kids are….Animal Tales has several Aesop’s fables on it.
My boys are 4.5 and 6.5, and Jim Weiss is often an afternoon entertainer at our house. They love The Jungle Book, The Three Musketeers and Robin Hood, King Arthur. Shakespeare for Children has A Midsummer Night’s Dream, based in ancient Greece. Galileo and the Stargazers is great, and includes stories about Archimedes (ancient Rome).
Good Luck Duck and Uncle Wiggly’s Storybook are fun for younger listeners. Just So Stories, Giants!, American Tall Tales are ones we enjoy. Come On, Seabiscuit! Was great for a car trip.
I didn’t love A Christmas Carol, but it was by no means bad. ;). I have avoided the Bible stories, but more because I prefer them to hear it straight from the source.
And my catalog is well marked for future purchases, too. Can you tell we are big fans? He’s coming to our homechool curriculum fair, and my boys are super excited to meet him in person.
At his website, greathall.com, you can see him telling The Toroise and The Hare, as well as a story about Abraham Lincoln.
I agree w/ Galileo and the Stargazers, plus, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. It was difficult at first to get into it, but that was only because we weren’t actually using it for history, just a good audio. We really enjoyed it. We have also enjoyed his Sherlock Holmes series and Shakespeare for kids.
And, I think our Galileo cassette tape has another recording titled Archimedes and the Golden Crown, which we liked as well.
