Got the title wrong.  Argh.  Anyway, a friend of mine recently reviewed this book on her blog; I haven’t read it yet but hope to.  It’s Hundred Dollar Holiday, by Bill McKibben.  Annoyingly, it’s a small book and isn’t cheap itself (kind of funny to have an anti-materialism book that is small and costs $12, lol)

I know exactly how you feel. We keep things very simple here at our home to. We don’t give our children gifts but at Birthdays and Christmas so we usually get them a couple things that they want and anything they might need. We do have a budget that we keep in mind, however we like to get them the “thing” they have wanted all year. My children don’t ask for many things and their list usually consist of one great item and books! LOL!

However, my inlaws go WAY out because my children are their only grandchildren and we have begged and pleaded for them to not do so much. We could buy our children nothing and they would still have way too much because of the inlaws! This year when she started asking what the children wanted they gave her a list of books they would like plus a telescope. She wouldn’t have any part of that! She said she didn’t want to give them “school” things that she wanted to get them things that they would LOVE. Truth is that is what they would have loved! Its a very sad thing and its very hard on us because we stress to our children its NOT about getting its all about Jesus! This year I know she has already spent over 1000.00 on them, and well it has made it very tense between us. I also have to pray really hard that the Lord help me keep a good attitude and help me in some way show her that Christmas is about the birth of our Lord and not about presents. She loves to give them the best gifts and wants to be the best and thats why she goes overboard I do believe. Its makes it really hard when you are trying to teach your children to be thankful and grateful for all things and that Chirstmas is about HIS PRESENCE NOT PRESENTS!!! Im glad that my husband and I agree on the topic and that we can instill the true meaning of Christmas in our home and children. We can’t afford much for our children and she knows that, however my children are lovers of books and not gadgets so it can be very hard. Time spent with our families is the most meaningful gifts we could ever give. Im so thankful for Christmas for the birth of my savior and that we are able to celebrate the Nativity. No matter what our budget may be I want to make sure I instill in my children that Christmas in our home is all about HIM.

I hope everyone here has a very Merry Christmas and a blessed time with their families.
