I think each habit is a bit different and can be approached differently. Our current habit is attention. We read through one or two lessons each week from LDTR for Children. Some lessons are just readings or verses to discuss. Others are fun activities to complete. We also discuss the habit of attention as it comes up throughout the week, and the importance of paying attention. We’ve talked about paying attention in church services (especially to the Bible readings and sermons) and what to do when our mind starts to wander. We’ve also talked about attention with picture study and narrations. It’s come up during chores as well. We don’t focus on it constantly or even everyday, but I think the few conversations we have are getting them to see the importance of developing the habit of attention.
Another habit we did awhile back was cleanliness. I covered it very differently. I chose to focus on one area, dental health. I put up signs in the bathroom for them to brush, floss, and rinse. I made sure they were getting their teeth cleaned twice a day, so good dental health would be a habit. I do still have to remind my younger ones, but the older ones have gotten much better about not needing reminding. In fact my oldest always has her teeth cleaned when I give them a reminder!
One thing that helps me with consistency is seeing the habit written in my lesson plans. As we go about our studies, I’m reminded to bring it up throughout the week. Signs around the house can be a help as well…maybe find a quote or Bible verse that relates to the habit.
I’m interested to see other ways you are all covering this topic. I’d also love to hear how the Accountable Kids program works out for you…I’ve looked into it in the past.
