What habit are you working on now, and how?

We’re gearing up to start in again here, and as I consider how best to attack working on habit formation again, I thought it would be neat to get a “week in the life” picture of what you all are doing on this.  Let’s talk about how you keep focused and keep working at it throughout the day, as well as what materials you’re using to guide and assist you.  I’ll start:

I’m considering a little different approach this time, and I have found a tool I think will help me keep up with it.  We will be using the “Accountable Kids” plan with progress boards, and my long term (whole year maybe) focus is going to be “Work before play” rather than attentiveness, diligence, or so on.  Then we will take a few days/weeks on each of the character traits/habits that would help us in that.  Attentiveness, obedience, diligence, personal initiative, cheerfulness…But the thing I always struggle with is that most important part of just keeping at it throughout the days and not losing my focus and dropping the ball.  You know how it is, if Mom doesn’t keep the focus, it quickly falls apart.  The “Accountable Kids” program looks like it could be the missing link I’ve been needing to help me with this.  It should help me keep track of progress and hold us all accountable.  I plan to use the following materials to read from and discuss as the days go by: Laying Down the Rails for myself, Laying… for Children, A Call to Character (if I can find my book).  What is working  for you?

I think each habit is a bit different and can be approached differently.  Our current habit is attention.  We read through one or two lessons each week from LDTR for Children.  Some lessons are just readings or verses to discuss.  Others are fun activities to complete.  We also discuss the habit of attention as it comes up throughout the week, and the importance of paying attention.   We’ve talked about paying attention in church services (especially to the Bible readings and sermons) and what to do when our mind starts to wander.  We’ve also talked about attention with picture study and narrations.  It’s come up during chores as well.  We don’t focus on it constantly or even everyday, but I think the few conversations we have are getting them to see the importance of developing the habit of attention.

Another habit we did awhile back was cleanliness.  I covered it very differently.  I chose to focus on one area, dental health.  I put up signs in the bathroom for them to brush, floss, and rinse.  I made sure they were getting their teeth cleaned twice a day, so good dental health would be a habit.  I do still have to remind my younger ones, but the older ones have gotten much better about not needing reminding.  In fact my oldest always has her teeth cleaned when I give them a reminder!

One thing that helps me with consistency is seeing the habit written in my lesson plans.  As we go about our studies, I’m reminded to bring it up throughout the week.  Signs around the house can be a help as well…maybe find a quote or Bible verse that relates to the habit.

I’m interested to see other ways you are all covering this topic.  I’d also love to hear how the Accountable Kids program works out for you…I’ve looked into it in the past.
