Ours looks a lot like Kayla’s with my almost 3 and 5 year old napping from 1-4 and me and our 12 week old resting downstairs. We’ve tried droppng the older one’s nap but he has proved to really need that rest.

Afternoon rest is a godsend. My husband is gone before we wake and not home until 6:15pm so we all really need a break each day (especially me!).

Our quiet time is from 1pm-2pm, right after lunch & a couple of chores.  The kids are all in their rooms.  The 3 girls (ages 10, 9, & 7) read free reads or crochet on their beds.  Our 4yo boy usually plays in his room because he hasn’t *quite* figured out *quiet* time & sitting and reading for an hour.  But he is getting better at that now.  He now wants his bedroom door open (I had been closing it so even he plays, I can still have quiet LOL), so we are working more on reading, or at the very least, playing quietly.  I will slowly work him up to staying on his bed “reading” in his head.

I read, play on the computer, relax, or nap.  Or whatever needs to be done.  I NEED that quiet time.  We have always had it in our house, as well.  It’s just what we do, and the kids are used to it.

We have rest time for a couple hrs every afternoon right after lunch. My girls are 10 1/2, 9, and 6 and they simply read, draw, and listen to audio books. My middle daughter lays in my room with me since she and the oldest share a room. They love this time of day. I agree with pianogirl, we all need a time alone each day for sanity sake. I’m an introvert so I thrive on quiet time. Wink I read books, Facebook/emails, and then take a quick snooze. I’m a night owl so it recharges my batteries. After quiet time, the girls practice piano then have freetime until dinner. I am then ready for my crossfit work out then supper.

Love quiet time! I agree with pinkballerina that if you are a natural born introvert, quiet time is a life saver. Without it, I get crabby, and that makes for an unhappy evening :-(.

The benefits of an hour to yourself extend to each family member, however! For a large family, especially, it is nice for everyone to just STOP TALKING for an hour! And I think it has trained my kids to be a little more thoughtful, and a little more able to be alone – skills that are important throughout life.

What does it look like around here? One hour – generally 2-3:

12yo dd in her room, reading or sewing or crocheting or journaling or quilting….

10yo ds in my room or his dad’s office, reading, cracking a code, or writing….

9yo ds in the living room, reading for 30 minutes, and playing imaginary games with his hot wheels, legos, gi joes, etc. for the other 30

8yo ds in the study reading, drawing, and listening to music

5yo ds in his room looking at books (reading), making paper airplanes with elaborate designs, and singing, usually

Mom – generally eating something, and drinking tea ;-). And catching up with friends online or on the phone. READING, if I am lucky! I spent a wonderful 20 minutes with ‘Ivan Densovich’ today!

I think that’s the beauty of quiet time. It gives everyone a little space to work on what they love and think thoughts that are undisturbed or interrupted by the opinions of others. Essential in our home!
