I am wondering what kind of journal/notebooks and what kind of pencils or other writing instruments you use to do nature study? New to this really, but wanting to do nature journals as we will be spending more time outside now that the weather is beautiful.

Hi there! We’ve always used simple sketch books from Wal-Mart and colored pencils. We’ve used high quality colored pencils and Crayola-it just depends on what we have available. My daughter has also used watercolor paints but she prefers pencils.

Any kind of journal/sketchbook and quality colored pencils.  We’re really basic here.

We currently have some small hardback sketchbooks from Hobby Lobby.  I try to find something fairly inexpensive, but decent quality.  They each have a nice set of sketching pencils, but we often use a regular #2 pencil.  I believe it’s equivalent to the HB pencil in their sketching set.  For art lessons, they have some larger spiral sketchbooks from Walmart…These would be nice for nature study as well.

Thanks for sharing. Have any of you used the new simply charlotte mason nature journals?
