Hello, My third grade son and I are brand-new to the idea of homeschooling and brand-new to CM. I am unclear what required books I need for him as we start out for the fist time this fall. I will not be homeschooling any other children. Some of the CM books are “family books” which confuses me as it will only be my third grader and I studying them.

For any of our History/geography/Bible lesson plan guides you need all of the books listed under “Family” and all of the books listed for grades 1-3. The Family books are the spine books, the books that follow the basic timeline through history from point A to point B. The books listed per grade level are age appropriate books that dive deeper into a specific person or event in history. Some of the Family books also dive deeper into a specific person or event in history, but are suitable for all ages.
