Someone here mentioned the Mitford series by Jan Karon a while back and I got hooked. We have just finished the one.. can’t place name.. where Father Tim stays at the farm. Douley gets a truck. And Douleys one brother last chapter is standing at the door on Christmas. AHH I need the next book. ;
Is there a next book yet? Do you know anything about a next book? I tried to open her offical web site and couldn’t get it loaded? I am addicted and “want” the next one even my kids keep asking if I have figured out the next one.

You’ve just finished Light from Heaven which is the last book in the Mitford series. Now you need to read the books in the Father Tim series. They are:
Home to Holly Springs (Father Tim travels to his old home.)
In the Company of Others (Father Tim & Cynthia travel to Ireland. )
There will be two more also. I’m not sure if those are out yet.

You can probably get these from your library, but here is a link for the whole set with the numbers beside them so you can write it all down! They are great. Never thought about reading them to my children.

oops… posted at same time as Sue. I did not know about the Father Tim series! The last one I read was when Father Tim filled in at the chapel at the coast and his disabled neighbor played beautiful piano music.

I just checked and these are all that is out. The author is already 75 so we need to pray if we want more. Did you read all of the first nine books in the Mitford series? I have them all in hard cover. I first got them from the library then bought paperbacks and finally I bought the hardcovers. I reread them. It’s been a few years now so I think I’ll read them again.

When reading them I always read #6 A Common Life as the third book because it is the story of their wedding which happened between books # 2 & #3. There is also The Mitford Bedside Companion and her cookbooks and other gift books. Plus children’s book. It is quite a collection.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but how is it that I’ve never heard of these books? They sound great! I have dc 7 and 8. Are they a good age to begin these books?

Lindsey, I think Sue was referring to her children’s books. The Mitford Series, while very good, is a bit much for small children. They are very long and do touch on some topics best suited for older readers.
Her children’s books are The Trellis and the Seed, Jeremy: the Tale of an Honest Bunny, Aunt Fannie’s Hat, Violet Comes to Stay, and Violet Goes to the Country. The Violet books are indirectly related to the Mitford series, as the Cynthia character is an author of a series of children’s books about her cat Violet.

Well I played the audio in the car. This is the only time I can read usually. My kids got in to them as much as I did. We have done all 9 books in the last 1 1/2. So my kids were 11 and down when we listened. Though at a younger as they might not understand I didn’t find anything to crazy for my kids but remember that is just my opinion. The places where things did get a bit questionable.. didn’t end up being of question the way it is dealt with I had no problems because they never actually “talked” about it. So I let my children and they really grew to love Father Tim.
I will request these other Father Tim books! She is 75 :0( I wanted to know what happens now.. I feel like I am left with so many unanswered questions. LOL Books are crazy that way sometimes.
Ok – now that you know I loved this series and have only a few to read. What other books did you like that are simular that I might enjoy? Thanks

nerakr listed the children’s books above. When I first heard of Jan Karon, people were saying that she is the modern day Jane Austen. Jim Trelease who wrote The Read Aloud Handbook says that if you love Jane Austen you will love the Frances books by Russell Hoban. These are my favorite children’s books. So if you haven’t read the Frances books to your kids you have to go get them all from the library.

Bread and Jam for Frances
A Baby Sister for Frances
Best Friends for Frances
A Bargain for Frances
These are by Russell Hoban but they are the best children’s books!

Ok so I am to assume she will not be writing more Mitford series books? I will always have to wonder how it all was put together in the end? LOL Don’t books just drive you crazy sometimes

I forgive your late night brain. The Father Tim series is a continuation of the Mitford series.

Jan Karon said that she didn’t have any more to say about Mitford but Father Tim is a great character so she is writing the Father Tim Series about his travels. In the first one he goes to Holly Springs where he grew up, in the second he and Cynthia go to Ireland. She plans to write two more. One will be about them traveling to Italy and I can’t remember what the other will be about. Mitford still exists for these books it is just he is not there.
