My kids are 10, 12 and 13. I think that the Lewis and Clark story is a great adventure, but don’t want to read them a documentary like book and make it dull for them. I personally think Streams to the River, River to the Sea is the best written, most engaging book on the topic, but I’m not sure of the suitablity for a 10 year old.What do you think? Any one like Seaman or Of Courage Undaunted? Others?

My kids are 6, 8 and 10 and we are starting Of Courage Undaunted tomorrow! We’ll see how it goes.
Obviously I’m aiming this book more to the 8 and 10 year olds. I also checked out some fun picture books that are informative for the younger one, but I know the olders will appreciate them too (there is a decent amount of text):
American Slave, American Hero: York of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (Laurence Pringle)
The Great Expedition of Lewis and Clark by Private Reubin Field, Member of the Corps of Discovery (Judith Edwards)
My 10 year old will read Dog of Discovery: A Newfoundland’s Adventures with Lewis and Clark (Laurence Pringle). I looked for Seaman, but my library doesn’t have it…

We’re reading Of Courage Undaunted now, too. My kids are 10, 7, 4, 1. I think it’s suitable for your age kids from what we’ve read (the first 20 or so pages). We have Seaman, my kids all like it. There are several documentaries on Netflix, too.

Of Courage Undaunted is great, and probably would be my favorite for that age group.

My friend used The captain’s dog : my journey with the Lewis and Clark tribe / Roland Smith

when her son was 9 or 10. We plan to use it too when we reach that part of history. “Geography Matters” uses this book in their Trail Guide to US Geography guide as a study of Geography Through Literature.

My children loved Lewis and Clark and Me: A Dog’s Tale. It might be a bit young (though it’s listed for ages 8-12), but the illustrations are lovely and we enjoyed reading it together.
