I’m thinking through my subjects for next year for my dc in grades 2-6.
Family studies:
poetry
artist
composer
read aloud
bible memory verses
character study
hymns
SCM History guide (possibly)
Spanish
Latin Word Roots (rummy game)
Nature Study
Science
Independent depending on age:
grammar
dictation/copywork
reading
math
written narrations
(oldest will also do her own science, typing, and possibly more Spanish)
Obviously not all of these are done everyday and they are not going to take up enough time. The only thing I can think of that I’m missing is drawing. What do I still need to or can add??
Well I’m not sure what you mean by not enough time. Is there a state requirement you must meet? I have a hard time fitting it all in. Personally, I don’t think you need to add anything.
Here are some ideas for you though:
P.E. / health
field trips
math games
educational games
puzzles
cooking, home ec.
finances
watch live performances
play musical instruments
educational videos: travel shows, nature shows,
history shows, recordings of fine art performances
There quiet a bit on your list that we don’t do (yet) but here are the items on my planning list that I didn’t see on yours. Maybe it will give you ideas of where you have forgotten something…
Family Work (this is ‘chores’ but we all work together and is scheduled into our school day)
Physical Activity (often mountain biking for us)
Free Time (I schedule it is just like other subjects bc I think it is one of the most important things young children should be doing!)
Family Math – games we play together
Life Skills – telling time, counting money, cooking, swimming…
Here is what you are missing from what we cover in our schedule:
“gym” (We’re required to have this in NY – we just play outside) Geography map drills if you aren’t doing SCM history guide Language song – we learn a song per term in a different language. We mostly focus on Swedish, since my sister is living in Sweden, and the kids are interested in the culture. But we’ve learned French songs when we were studying french too.
Individual we cover:
Computer time ( I have a squidoo site set up for each of them filled with websites that have to do with things we’re studying. And a few fun things here and there. )
Piano (we use Simplymusiconline.com)
My older (5th grade) does Latin. (we use visual latin)
“Free Drawing” – this is where they can draw, color, paint, sculpt, etc.
Handicrafts – (we usually only do this for one or 2 terms out of the year)
Hmm.. a lot of the things suggested we are already doing. They are just not labeled as school time, but things they choose during free time or part of chore time.
I forgot to add in time for our BOC work. Handicrafts cover many things for us: art, history crafts, new chore skills, computer skills, etc. Handicrafts are really part of our free time choices.
Thanks for reminding me that I wanted to spend some time journaling with my two oldest girls and I want to add some time for us to learn new educational games and to use them to review what we are learning. I also need to add some time for poetry memorization and reading out loud to me.
Yay! Looks like we will have extra time for more reading or nature walks.
