I am curious and a little confused about the best time to start year1 or 1st grade level with a homeschool curriculum CM style. My ds has a mid-May birthday (will be 6 this coming year and I was planning to start 1st grade work the first of August, but I am finding while viewing CM forums sites like this one that many wait until their child is closer to age 7 to start formal education/narrations/history/etc….Our ds is in ps K right now and on track with learning his phonics, beginning to read 3 letter word books, simple math, etc….I just would want to wait to start formal narrations, an academic math program, and higher level literature suggestions for the 1st year until he’s closer to 7 (perhaps in January instead of August) if it’s better in the long run to wait longer.
Well, honestly, that will depend on what boards you are hanging out on and what CM based “curriculum” you are looking at using.
I don’t think anyone using SCM here, or similar have a problem with starting with a 6yo.
However – if you are looking at AO or some others, they would mostly advise waiting until age 7 or very near age 7…. (and as someone that started AO with a young 6yo…. I would say if you are doing AO, wait until age 7!)
Good advice….actually I was originally looking soley at AO, but now thinking I may use it as a booklist vs. a curriculum after researching it. I was thinking after previewing some of the AO year1 literature selections online, that ds would be too young to grasp the AO selections unless he was an older 6 yo or 7 yo starting out. But now mainly I am torn between MFW (which isn’t pure CM), SCM, or to mix in AO with SCM or MFW. I was all set to begin in August, but when I read in posts about someone starting closer to age 7 I second guessed myself if it would be too soon. Thanks.
