With what age do you start reading the actual plays of Shakespeare with your children? And when you do read them, do you stop to “figure out” the language and meaning as you go? I’m just thinking that even as an adult when I read Shakespeare I have to have a commentary like “No More Fear Shakespeare” or Cliff notes or something alongside of it just to understand what is being said. It can be a rather slow project to sort through it all as I read. Just wondering what all of you have done….just read it to hear the flow of the language? Or stop and analyze and try to understand as you go?

I was just looking at this last night: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/shakespeare/

It answers some of your question anyway.  It’s Sonya’s recommendation in the free curriculum guide here.  It helped me…maybe will help you too.

Thank you- that does have some good ideas. It is helpful to see which plays to choose. I’m still not sure about how to read the actual text, though. After reading the story versions do you just read the actual text and hope it makes sense? Or do you stop and try to understand every sentence as you read? I hope this makes sense….when I have studied a Shakespeare play on my own I find I am a detail person and want to understand everything they are saying. Maybe that isn’t necessary when reading it with children? Maybe they just need to hear the language and get the general idea of the story?
