I have 4 children, ages 7, 5, 3, and 1. I was planning on doing the Chronicles of Narnia this year, but I feel like it’s something that maybe should wait another year or two. The kids were enjoying The Magician’s Nephew, but I had a feeling deep down that kept urging me to move on to something else. I was planning on just switching over to the Little House series since I know my kiddos enjoy them and I own a few extras already to expand on some of the ideas in them, but then The Hatchet popped into mind. I remember snippets of it from when I read it many years ago, but not enough to know if it’s age appropriate (I never realized it was one book in a series!). I also read the description of The Quilt which sounded intriguing. Just curious if anyone had any thoughts on them for younger ones.

Hi there! I don’t think I would have read Hatchet to my kiddos at those ages. My youngest was about 9 when I read it aloud to her and my 15 year old son. Even then, I remember wondering if my daughter was too young. They did really enjoy the book though-especially my son. 🙂

I wouldn’t definitely not read Hatchet at that age, but you might consider Jean Craighead George’s trilogy which begins with My Side of the Mountain if you are looking for that kind of adventure. Hmmm, actually now I’ve just looked back up at your post and the ages of your children. I’d probably stick with your idea for the Little House series, or the Adventures of series by Thornton Burgess. Or the Tucket series by Paulson. The Thornton Burgess series were brilliant for us at that age. The chapters are just the right length, and it’s so well written that I often extended by taking a sentence or two from our daily reading and using it for copywork using a copywork template.

Good to know – thank you all! I will have to get a copy to read for myself so I can have a better idea of content… I can’t remember much other than a few random snippets.
We actually read most of the Burgess books last year, I think we have one or two we didn’t get to. I’ll look up the Tucket series, I have never heard of it.

We just finished the Tucket series and really enjoyed it. My kids are 12, 10, 8, 6 and 3. My six-year old only got so much out of it, compared to the older three, and I definitely think they were a better age to appreciate it. There were, also, a few scenes in the last book that I edited as one in particular was too graphic for my taste. I would personally wait on this one.
Have you looked into the Sam Campbell series? We think they are wonderful. There is also Arthur Scott Bailey, who is similar to Burgess.

Wow, I have so much to learn! So many authors I have never even heard of . I used to read a LOT, but it wasn’t really quality stuff (and thinking back I am sure if my mom actually took the time to read what she was allowing me to pick out form the library she would have thought twice… then again, not sure she would have said anything ).
