I would like to find a book that has the longer catechism, preferably with scripture references. I know there are websites out there, but I would prefer a book we can use for family worship. Anyone have any recommendations? Thank you in advance!
We have a great book by Williams or Williamson on the Westminster and one on the Heidleberg catechisms. Those are great. There are some great online bookstores where you can search for what you are looking for. One is http://www.heritage.org. And the other place is http://www.wtsbooks.com. Hope this helps.
We are doing the Westminster Shorter Catechism and using, besides memorizing, Training Hearts Teaching Minds by Starr Meade. It is very well done. Not what you were looking for, but in case someone else would like a study in the Shorter.
Do people choose the shorter one for a reason? This is my first exposure to researching this, so if that is a silly question it is because I don’t know anything. 🙂 I briefly looked at the shorter and longer online and saw that the end of the longer one had questions about the Lord’s prayer, which I liked since we do the Lord’s prayer every night. Is there a difference between the longer and shorter that I should think about? Thank you!
The Shorter has questions about the Lord’s Prayer as well. They start with question 99. Each question thereafter looks at each petition in the prayer. The Shorter, I believe, was originally intended for children, but most of us today struggle with the depth of it. Ds (8) recently learned #60…How is the Sabbath to be sanctified? The Sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days, and spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God’s worship, except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy.
As I said, we use Training Hearts Teaching Minds which is very good at helping the children understand how each question is taught in Scripture and how we apply each one. She uses a more modern translation for the Q&A but I read from the original since that’s what the boys memorize.
The Shorter is much more accessible for my children. The Longer has more questions and the answers are much more detailed. If you don’t have much experience with the catechism, I would recommend starting with the Shorter.
