I’m looking into purchasing watercolors this year. What brand do you buy and where? I found some at Hobby Lobby but not sure if they are artist quality–not that we’d know the difference since this is brand new for us. Dick Blick online has 52% but you only get 5 colors in a set for $20.

Also are watercolor pencils to use WITH watercolors or instead of??

    Thanks, ladies!

    Hi Tara,

I bought watercolor pencils from wal-Mart..for cheap. They can  be used alone, as in color with and paint over with water or with watercolor paints to add dimension, details, expression. I really  like mine and would like to have the primacolor pencils. My five children are under 9yr adn the cheap seemed to be the best for us/me to experiemnt with. A grandma friend of mine made water color pictures for her grandchildren using these. She sent them in the mail and the kids were able to “paint” the picture grandma sent. She just hand copied with the pencils things she knew her g-kids liked. It was a great idea for long distance bonding:) I like the ease of these for outdoor painting. A water bottle, brush and paper.. simple. I bought water color paper and cut it into 1/4ths someimes 1/8th to economize and keep it simple too. It dosen’t take so much space and the cover of a book works as an easel.I also had a better mental attitude and over came fears of mistakes by telling myself ‘It’s only a small peice of paper”:) Now I can make cards with these and be happy to share it with some one else:) I like florals for starts because of the small, focused object. No need to fix up a background and all that..

Anyway, art is my passion along with Jesus, husband, home

    Have fun!

Thank you for the wonderful idea! I think I may try those pencils then. I saw them while at walmart today. 😉 Can you sketch with pencil first before coloring with the pencils? Then water over that? Or will that show pencil smudge? lol I like the idea of sketching to make sure I like the picture before coloring it in, as I’m sure my daughter will also. She gets frustrated if it doesn’t look like she wants it too.

    Thanks again!
    Tara
