I am planning to get some watercolor pencils for my 5 and 7 year old to start using in their nature journal. However, I have never used them before. Is there a resource that would help me learn some techniques to share with my little ones? What has been your experience with watercolor pencils?

We love them. They require less pressure than colored pencils.  And watch your water, too much and you’ll have a very blobby looking picture. Honestly the best way to learn is just to practice. Take a piece of paper and practice using heavier and lighter strokes and varying amounts of water on your paper.  We love Faber-Castell watercolor pencils.

There are a few techniques you can use with watercolor pencils.  You can draw lines straight onto paper, then use a wet paintbrush to spread the color.  You can use a wet paintbrush to extract color directly from the pencil, then put the paintbrush to paper.  Or you can get your paper wet and make your drawings.

I would suggest paper that is suited for water color, as it will bleed through other papers.

I also enjoy using fine tipped pens, like Sakura Pigma Micron pens to draw shapes or outlines, then add water color.  The ink won’t bleed, and it makes a really interesting image.  You can get them at art supply stores.

Just get creative, try it, and see what works best for you!

Here’s a video that combines ink and watercolor:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WPABn0pQVY

Thank you for the ideas! We will look forward to trying them out!
